Book Description

Feb 9 2010 The Lumatere Chronicles
2008 Printz Award Winner Melina Marchetta crafts an epic fantasy of ancient magic, exile, feudal intrigue, and romance that rivets from the first page.

Finnikin was only a child during the five days of the unspeakable, when the royal family of Lumatere were brutally murdered, and an imposter seized the throne. Now a curse binds all who remain inside Lumatere’s walls, and those who escaped roam the surrounding lands as exiles, persecuted and despairing, dying by the thousands in fever camps. In a narrative crackling with the tension of an imminent storm, Finnikin, now on the cusp of manhood, is compelled to join forces with an arrogant and enigmatic young novice named Evanjalin, who claims that her dark dreams will lead the exiles to a surviving royal child and a way to pierce the cursed barrier and regain the land of Lumatere. But Evanjalin’s unpredictable behavior suggests that she is not what she seems — and the startling truth will test Finnikin’s faith not only in her, but in all he knows to be true about himself and his destiny.

Review

"The world of this book is dark and beautiful and utterly believable; and, as I’ve come to expect of Marchetta’s work, the characters are wonderfully complex. Here is an author who writes fantasy as well as she writes realism — and in the case of Melina Marchetta, that’s high
praise, indeed!" — Kristin Cashore, author of GRACELING and FIRE — Quote

"A tremendous achievement; a wonderful story full of vivid characters and landscapes. . . .Spellbinding and fantastic." — SYDNEY MORNING HERALD — Quote

"A hauntingly beautiful fantasy allegory. . . . A daring departure from Marchetta’s previous books, and it works brilliantly." — THE CANEBERRA TIMES — Quote

Wow. I savoured every single word of this book. Melina Marchetta's way with words has struck again on the fine core of my brain. I love fantasy, and this is one of the most realistic fantasy written books I've read. It's taking a well deserved place in my favourite fantasy bookshelf next to almighty Tolkien. Yeah, I'm that impressed.

This story is set in a land called Skuldendore and describes the lives of those who survived the aftermath of a terrible curse in one of its kingdoms Lumatere. 10 years have passed since Lumatereans were forced to exile as a result from the slaughter of their king and a dark cloud that enclosed the realm. We travel this land alongside Finnikin of the Rock, the son of Trevanion- whom is the captain of the Guard-. Finn is trying to help the exiles scattered in camps throughout Skuldendore. This book starts with a journey where he is summoned by a novice Evanjalin.

This is just a brief description of the setting, spoiler free, since Finnikin's world is so rich and complex, I see myself re-reading it over and over again.

Despite not really knowing when this story takes place or where exactly - the reader is provided with a map of the island (presumably) as well as the actual kingdom Finnikin of the Rock and his family, friends and people live in. All in all, however, all of this does not really matter once the story truly unfolds - and unfolding it does Big Time!
Essentially a tale about displaced people due to greed - as so often happens - who, eventually, start fighting back and hard ... with an unusual and very unsuspected instigator. Our heroes literally travel from one end of their known world to the other, overcoming obstacles all along their way and finally finding what they are looking for and actually never knew they were looking for in the first place. Their `instigator' slowly makes them see what is actually important - to live rather than simply recording death and feeling sorry for their people who all appear to have given up hope of ever returning home or are simply waiting for someone else to come up with an idea. In comes Evangeline ...
Yup - a woman saves the day ... yet again. I'm not sure whether this has to do with the author being female and the fact that we all too often get to read books on how the damsel in distress is saved by the big strong male or whether literature in general is changing - but that does not really matter. In fact, men and women working together is all important and Melina Marchetta spins a wonderful yarn from beginning to end proving just that. Well Done :)

Finnikin has had the world on his shoulders since the age of nine. Although not yet men, Prince Balthazar, Lucien, and he promised to protect the royal family for the rest of their lives.

The boys are unaware that in a short time their world will be torn apart; the royal family murdered, and their country in despair.

In ten years time, Finnikin and Evanjalin, a novice of a Goddess, work towards ending the terrible rule over the people of Lumatere.

FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK is spoken through the hand of a true fantasy writer, Melina Marchetta. Validly, a world is created all on its own full of mystery, adventure, and both romantic and horrifying surprises.

From beginning to end, every character is cherished and their flaws and strengths are examined openly - especially in the prolonged development of the relationship between Finnikin and Evanjalin, when each reveal they want something more than companionship but believe the fate of the world is more important than happiness.
