Firefly Island, Aug 24 2007
This review is from: Firefly Island (Hardcover)
Daniel Arenson writes a fantastic tale of horror, friendship, love, and triumph intertwined in the lives of the four fire children struggling with the burden of their destiny. The unpredictable twists and turns of Firefly Island left me eagerly turning the page to learn the fate of characters I came to adore. Most admirable, is the way the author moves through feelings of utter desolation to exuberant triumph; highlighting both the injurious and encouraging aspects of human nature. I would recommend this book to fantasy and non-fantasy readers alike.

Fantasy's best kept secret, Aug 21 2007
This review is from: Firefly Island (Hardcover)
If you are looking for a great adventure story that is easy to read and follow, doesn't contain any cliched archetypes or races like dwarves, elves, orcs, and wizards shooting fireballs at each other on page 3, a book that isn't just a derivation of the Lord of the Rings, then this is the book for you. It tells of the amazing and tragic story of a girl, Aeolia, who is sold to an ogre at age six, and chronicles her life until she discovers that she is the only one who can hurt the stone king, Sinther, who is made completely of stone (even his heart!). It's a moving tale with excellent characterization, magnificent descriptions, excellent storytelling, a great, non-convoluted plot, and something that just remains in your head a long time after you have read it. A very memorable tale. It also makes an excellent read for boys and girls aged 11 and up, a great follow-up to Harry Potter or the Bartilimaeus Trilogy or Silvering. If your children loved those books, they must read this one!

A Fantasy that will blow you away!, Aug 18 2007
This review is from: Firefly Island (Hardcover)
Torn from the only family she had ever known, six year old Aeolia had no idea the horrors her future beheld. Promising to keep her special skill secret were the last words she said to her brother Joren before the Ogre took her away; and made her his slave.
Aeolia knew that Joren would come for her when he became of age and so she idled her time as the years passed. Ten years later she knew Joren would be coming for her. The Ogre's daughter confessed to seeing Joren in the town; but could Aeolia believe the maddened Ogress?
Talin a Forrestfellow just happened to be in the right place at the right time, or else Lale would have killed Aeolia for her secret skill that could cause a major rift in his life. Talin had his own issues with Lale, so there was no reserve in wanting to kill the man that murdered his entire family. He would not kill the Esiren Firechild, she was the one who could bring hope back to their world.
During Aeolia's search for Joren and her escape from Lale, she fell madly in love with Talin. He seemed to be the man of her dreams. They would fight side by side for the rest of their lives, so they were wed with the assumption of having a happy ending.
Could Joren be so heartless as to kill his own flesh and blood sister? Was she really blood to Joren or had her entire up bringing been told with a small piece missing that could bring on the demise of The Stone King Sinther?
Truly Aeolia is faced with many dangers, death, betrayal and horror. She holds the key that will kill the evil Stone King; hopefully she will live long enough to use her key to unlock the freedom of Heland.
Mr. Arenson's historical Sci-Fi story is compelling. I did not want this story or romance, war, and friendship to end. There is a little something for every reader in Firefly Island. I kept hoping for the best while reading this story and I can assure you I was not disappointed one bit by the story telling Mr. Arenson delivers. I award 5 hearts to Daniel Arenson's story Firefly Island.
