Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5 - Browsers will enjoy these attractive offerings that feature the publisher's signature full-color photos with lengthy captions. Encyclopedia describes the animal world in five sections: mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, "creepy-crawlies," and fish. The reference section includes animal superlatives such as the largest, the loudest, the fastest, and the tallest mammals or the deadliest snake. Each section begins with a quiz challenging readers to identify several cross-sections of animal bodies pictured in the chapter. Children learn about different species' parenting, daily life, courtship, defense, and eating habits. While fascinating facts abound and intriguing close-ups will delight children, the information is spotty: one entry may cover quirky eating habits, another, a unique defense mechanism. Thus, report writers will need to look elsewhere. Atlas begins with an introduction covering the continents, biomes, and information on how to read the featured maps. Maps of each area include capitals, towns, mountains, borders, and rivers. In addition, small pictures identify famous landmarks, native animals, national sports, and products. Each area is highlighted on a globe in a corner of the page. "Get going" notes offer simple recipes, crafts, and activities. Vibrant photos of wildlife, landscapes, natural phenomenon, and people are included. Small reproductions of the flags of the world are appended. While there is much to look at in this appealing resource, The National Geographic Beginner's World Atlas (National Geographic, 1999) offers larger, easier-to-read maps. - Barbara Auerbach, New York City Public Schools

I've been surprised at how interested my two boys (5 and 7) have been in this book. The animal descriptions are informative and not condescending and the pictures are informative and vibrant. It has also been a great introduction to indexes. They love looking up the animal's name in the index and finding the page number to turn to. Another great DK book to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite present!!, Dec 14 2005
By M. Tucker - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Dk First Animal Encyclopedia (Hardcover)
I bought this encyclopedia for my son's 7th birthday. It was his favorite gift, hands down. He still takes it with him everywhere. The book is full of pictures and lots of neat facts that are enough to challenge a 7 year old, but concise enough that he can read them simply. The book is split up into different categories of animals: Mammals, Creepy Crawlies, Birds, Reptiles, etc. Then each category has pages for different types of that creature. For example, mammals has ocean mammals, horses, marsupials, flying mammals, etc. The pictures are wonderful, and as I said, the amount of text is just right. I am so glad I bought this. My son is happy to sit for hours on end looking at this book. I highly recommend it for any animal loving child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, solid kids encyclopedia, Feb 26 2006
By L. Fabiunke - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Dk First Animal Encyclopedia (Hardcover)
This encyclopedia is a good introduction into the animal kingdom. It does read well and the illustrations and imagery are well done. The categories make looking up animal groups a breeze. There is enough detail and close ups on the smaller animals, which really helps with understanding the animals.

Even the rediculous representation of the T-Rex found in the Big Dinosaur Book by DK makes a cameo, which we found amusing.

Overall a worthy purchase, promising long use.
