Book Description

Sep 27 2010
Set in the awe-inspiring world of the Malazan Empire, here are three tales of the enigmatic and eccentric necromancers Bauchelain and Korbal Broach collected in one volume.

BLOOD FOLLOWS -- In the port city of Lamentable Moll, a diabolical killer stalks the streets and panic grips the citizens like a fever. As Emancipor Reese's legendary ill luck would have it, his previous employer is the unknown killer's latest victim. But two strangers have come to town, and they have posted in Fishmonger's Round a note, reeking of death-warded magic, requesting the services of a manservant.

THE LEES OF LAUGHTER'S END -- After their blissful sojourn in Lamentable Moll, the sorcerers Bauchelain and Korbal Broach -- along with their manservant, Emancipor Reese -- set out on the open seas aboard the sturdy ship Suncurl. Alas, there's more baggage in the hold than meets the beady eyes of the crew, and unseemly terrors awaken. For Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, and Emancipor Reese, it is just one more night on the high seas, on a journey without end.

THE HEALTHY DEAD -- The city of Quaint's zeal for goodness can be catastrophic, and no one knows this better than Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, two stalwart champions of all things bad. The homicidal necromancers -- and their substance-addled manservant, Emancipor Reese -- find themselves ensnared in a scheme to bring goodness into utter ruination. Sometimes you must bring down civilization... in the name of civilization.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun, if at times gross read Jun 5 2011
Format:Paperback
This was my first book by this author and I am not familiar with the world where the stories are set. I generally enjoyed the style and the pacing.

I had been forewarned by a friend that the book contains some rather grisly scenes, so I was not as shocked as I could have been. It does get pretty gross at times.

The reason for 4 out of 5 stars is that the stories aren't all equal. That said, in my opinion they get better from one to the next. Thus, as the last one hits full stride, it makes you realize that the first one wasn't all it could have been.

Still excellent overall though. Highly recommend, especially if you're looking to get a solid yet quick fix of dark dark fantasy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mildly amusing Nov 12 2012

Not his best effort, in my opinion. It might be because it is difficult to like any of the characters, but they are also not all that well developed, not even the main characters. The disjointed storyline fits the main characters well, I‘d still have liked to follow some of those other characters more. Not enough of a storyline, following the two necromancers around. Amusing, though.
5.0 out of 5 stars What an odd little book Nov 11 2012

I totally loved it! A strange collection of tales that follow two minor characters from the greater Malazan series. If you like Malazan, you'll like this.
