Product Description

Review

"Ron McLarty is the perfect choice to present Baldacci's latest thriller. His clear, strong voice shifts effortlessly among the story's varying passages of sadness, anger, and irony. His facility with multiple characters of both genders and many ages, races, and regional accents enables the listener easily to keep track of everyone. Music and sound effects, used liberally in the opening sequences, trail off as the story progresses, becoming less frequent and lower in volume with each chapter. Too bad-their use enhances the story."—AudioFile

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Donald Mitchell #1 HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on May 2 2009
Format: Hardcover
If you liked Simple Genius, you'll find that First Family has many of the same appeals as well as a return of Sean King and Michelle Maxwell. This time Michelle closes in on the source of her childhood trauma . . . despite being ambivalent about finding out. The pair is overloaded with mysteries as the President's niece is kidnapped, the President's sister-in-law is murdered, and Michelle's mother is also killed. From the beginning, you'll follow the kidnappers but their motivation will be a mystery as well until near the end of the book. The book's key theme is the inevitability of justice being done . . . in one way or another.

The story starts pretty slowly but picks up speed around the middle. A good editor could have carved this book down by 150 pages, and it would have been a four-star novel. The remaining weakness is that Mr. Baldacci likes to exaggerate his characters just a little bit too much. As a result, they don't ring true in most cases. That makes it hard to live within the story as opposed to read about the characters. I thought that the mystery of Michelle's mother's death was pretty well done while the rest of the story was unnecessarily ponderous and sluggish. The best character in the book is the intelligent, resourceful, and poised kidnapped niece, Willa Dutton. The villain, Sam Quarry, is pretty entertaining as well for his contradictions. A book populated with more such characters that moved at a faster pace would have been a lot more fun.

Keep digging until you get to the bottom of every mystery!

I've been a fan of David Baldacci from the beginning and have read all of his novels. This was the first time I've listened to one. First Family did not disappoint!

Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, Secret Service Agents turned private eyes, are contacted by the First Lady - Jane Cox. Her neice has been kidnapped. The FBI is heading up the investigation, but Cox has dealt with King in the past and trusts him. She wants an extra set of eyes looking that report to her alone.

This was an excellent story, told from both the viewpoint of the kidnapper and those looking for him. The reasons behind the kidnapping are slowly and deliciously eked out, keeping my interest piqued. The character development is excellent as is the secondary plot line involving Michelle.

Ron McClarty was the reader and he did a phenomal job of bringing the characters to life. His voice is rich and pleasant to listen to. Each character was easily defined with a different voice. His inflections conveyed the emotions and nuances of the plot extremely well.

I knew I would enjoy the story as I knew the author, but honestly I think I just might listen to the next one as well.

First family continues the well told, and, I assume, unfinished story of King & Maxwell. I read this in paperback when it came out, but have gone back to refresh my memory of the series. Baldacci is one of the few thriller writers who creates stories that can be read more than once and First Family fits squarely in that tradition.

Definitely worth the Kindle purchase.
