First Grave on the Right is the smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper.
Charley sees dead people. That's right, she sees dead people. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.
This is a thrilling debut novel from Darynda Jones, an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing series Aug. 28 2012
By Sandy S. TOP 100 REVIEWER

FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT is the first novel in Darynda Jone’s Charley Davidson Grave series. Charlotte aka Charley is a part-time private investigator and a full-time Grim Reaper. NOT a Grim Reaper in the guise of a dark cloak, skeletal hand and sickle, but a sexy, self-assured, slightly supernatural woman who helps people cross-over between the planes. And of course…she sees dead people. But these dead people usually want something from Charley and her natural ‘sparkly’ personality seems to attract the recently deceased.

Charley’s father is a retired police office and is well aware of his daughter’s ability to communicate with those who have yet to cross., but to what extent is a mystery. And Uncle Bob (aka Ubie) frequently calls upon Charley to assist with murder investigations and the victims accountings of the events. A recent trio of murders, all partners in a law firm, have everyone looking to Charley for help including the three late lawyers. But there are those who refuse to acknowledge Charley’s ability to speak with the murder victims, and although her track record at solving the murders and uncovering clues is 100%, the non-believers will be harder to convince. But when all the clues start pointing to a possible connection between a controlling strip-club owner and a human trafficking ring, it is Charley who convinces the others, to allow her to go in undercover.

There are several secondary storylines including a domestic abuse case and missing children. And it is Charley who feels the effects of failure when she realizes that all was for not.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Grave on the Right March 17 2014

If you love a paranormal roamance/comedy you will love this book. I decided to read this book based on the cover as I do with most books. Charley Davidson is a P.I. who has to solve cases along with dealing with a paranormal being. She is a grim reaper so her job as a P.I. can be very easy at times especially when helping her Uncle who is a homicide detective. From helping people cross over to helping solve their murder she seems to do it all.

With witty comebacks and remarks along with t-shirt slogans at the beginning of each chapter, you will be laughing. I could not put this book down wanting, actually needing, to know what happens next with Charley and her paranormal love Reyes. I loved the story line in this book and the rest of the series. The love scenes are HOT and that make your blood boil!

From laughing to crying to falling in love this book has it all! I would highly recommend this book to everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Light, Entertaining, And Outrageously Funny Jan. 9 2011

Sometimes, even avid readers get into slumps where they are just too tired to pick up a new book. I'd been that way for about two - three months. I just didn't feel like reading, which is very odd for me. So, after the first of the year, I went looking for something engaging, easy, and light-hearted to get me back in the reading mood. Something that I wouldn't have to think too much about; something that would be marvelously enjoyable. Lucky for me, I stumbled across FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT, by newcomer Darynda Jones. Wacky, off-beat, and a tiny bit naughty, FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT fit the bill in oh-so-many ways.

FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT is a riotous combination of chic lit, detective suspense, and urban paranormal genres. P.I. Charley Davidson sees dead people. Well, she not only sees them, they are drawn to her. Because she is shiny. Very shiny. You see, Charley Davidson is a grim reaper. Well, not just a grim reaper, she is THE Grim Reaper. And not just THE Grim Reaper; Charlie Davidson is the portal (the shining light) through which all souls must travel to gain entrance to Heaven. The advantage to having these miraculous talents is that Charley Davidson not only helps the dead move on, she also help the police solve "unsolvable" cases. It does help when the victim can point you to the murderer.

Charlotte "Charley" Davidson is a strong, take no prisioners, my way or the highway kinda girl. She knows what she needs to do, and she does it, not really caring what other people think. Her character is delightful, endearing, and off the wall - she feels REAL and has quickly become a new favorite. Her spunky, devil-may-care attitude may get her in a world of trouble, but she always bounces back, and her heart is always in the right place. I predict that these qualities will make her very popular with readers.

FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT is happily mindless, something to be read for pure enjoyment. It is also an action-packed, fast-paced page turner that is very, very hard to put down. I read FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT nearly straight through, losing out on some much need sleep!

Delightful and zany, FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT is brain candy for the soul. It will wash away your worries, lift your spirits, and leave you smiling. Pretty impressive for a debut novel. I can't wait to see what Darynda Jones and Charley do next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danger Will Robinson! Jan. 25 2011
By Dianne E. Socci-Tetro - Published on

First Grave on the Right -by Darynda Jones

Let me say right off the bat -any author that has the nerve and the sense of humor to have her female lead name her breasts "the right one is Danger and the left one - Will Robinson" is going to be one I need to keep very close tabs on. Of course, she named her other girly parts, "but they don't get out as much". *chortle* Perhaps I have a skewed sense of humor, but I spritzed and snorted my coffee all over the place when I read that exchange between Charley Davidson and her nemesis Garret . And when you hear her say the name Garret you can almost hear the sneer in her voice.

A fine mix of Mystery, Speculative fiction, Comedy and action with just the tiniest slightest soupcon of Chick Lit thrown in just to keep things shakin'.
I don't really know what to say that probably hasn't been said, but this book was funny, refreshing, sexy without being ultra vulgar oh and did I mention funny already? I mean to me some of it was hilarious. If you took the best of MaryJanice Davidson's early Betsy the Vampire Queen and melded it with Janet Evanoviches, Stephnie Plum---you still wouldn't get half the laughs, half the mystery or half the fun. I already have the hard-cover on pre-order and that doesn't come out til August ..darn it all!

Ok but you may want to know a bit about this book don't you? Well Charley sees dead people to put it bluntly. She has her PI license and help the APD with cases and her Uncle is the cop she helps the most. She helps the murdered dead get justice. Most people don't believe she sees the dead, interacts with the dead, and as the Grim Reaper helps the dead pass over. That's right she is THE Grim Reaper as in the only one...or is she. Now lately she has been having some really good dreams if you know what I mean. Dreams that include one hot, studly Entity (her name for him) but lately she is coming to find out the The Entity may not be a dead guy or a ghost at all...oh my no. But, you'll just have to read this to find out just who and what he really is and just why was he in Prison. It will floor you. Oh and did I mention a really, clever mystery within all of this funny stuff?

There is enough everything to put this Author at the top of my To Buy list, and to know that this is a debut novel just absolutely floors me! Odd for me to have thought of this but for some reason I love the cover art too. I'm tired of the cartoonish covers or the uber broody dark covers that usually go along with some of the books in this genre. I think that the cover artist deserves kudos too this time around as well as the author. I try not to over populate my reviews with 5 star ones...but darn it, this one really deserves it for the out and out pure pleasure it gave me.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved, loved, loved this book! Jan. 14 2011

Author Darynda Jones has a smashing success with her debut novel "First Grave On The Right". I must admit that my favorite book subject is the paranormal but I've read so many bad novels in this genre that I didn't have high hopes for this book. Boy, was I wrong and I'm glad I was. You can tell me you told me so and I won't protest!

Charley Davidson (Dutch) is a private investigator, consultant to the Albuquerque Police and full-time Grim Reaper. Charley is not grim in the least. She is a bright, sparkling portal (to the dead) to the other side also known as "heaven". The dearly departed who did not immediately pass over can remedy their mistake later by moving through Charley to where they need to go. Charley sees dead people. She can also speak with them which puts her in a unique position to solve unsolved murders. She has a deceased assistant named Angel and an alive assistant named Cookie. Her uncle is a detective who has an unusually high rate of solved cases thanks to Charley and her unusual abilities. Added to the mix is a dream lover that Charley at first does not recognize and things get more complicated from there.

Charley's sarcasm and dry wit are a hoot and the writing is smart and fast paced. I couldn't put the book down and I am so looking forward to the sequel that will be released later this year.

3.0 out of 5 stars Touch the Night: Great Premise, but main character felt distant Feb. 12 2011
By Angela - Published on
Charley Davidson was born a reaper. The Grim Reaper, to be exact. She convinces the dead to go into the light. They're drawn to her, and she to them. Because of this she often ends up investigating the deaths that happened under unusual circumstances - like murder. Which is good, since being a reaper doesn't really pay the bills.

When three attorneys turn up dead, Charley helps out the PD with their case, through her Uncle Bob who's a detective. While she's searching for the culprit, and trying to help her other clients, Charley is also trying to figure out if her nightly visits from a phantom lover are more than they seem. This phantom has been following her all her life, and he just might not be dead. In fact, he could be something a whole lot more disturbing.

First Grave on the Right is sarcastic, humorous, quick and fun. There's the two mystery threads - the attorneys murders, and the spectral visitor - that serve to move the story along, though Charley's phantom is given much more credence and is much more interesting because of it.

Charley herself is extremely sarcastic. Extremely. She uses it to keep people and situations at arms length from her. I think this is a realistic defense considering what she is, but it also served to keep me at a distance. I think that I would have liked to be able to delve a little bit more into her, get some more depth and gotten to know her. I had a hard time connecting with her.

That being said, I caught myself laughing out loud a few times, even if I wasn't loving the fact that she named her breasts which just seemed absurd to me. There were times when it felt like she was being witty for the sake of being witty.

The ending I absolutely loved. The resolution of the Big Bad that's been haunting Charley is a fantastic hook. It completely pulled me in and made me want to find out what happened next, making me think that First Grave on the Right is really more of an introductory book to get us into the world and life of Charley Davidson. I will be picking up the second book, Second Grave on the Left when it's released to see if I can connect more with Charley.

First Grave on the Right is an enjoyable, witty ride with an interesting premise. I really enjoyed the idea of a grim reaper and what that meant for the world. I'm definitely interested in seeing where Darynda Jones takes Charley, and us, next.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Grave on the Right Feb. 3 2011
By KristiS - Published on
Once I finished this book, I wanted to give it 5+++ stars! This debut is destined to become a favorite series of readers everywhere
I have yet to see an author write with such wit and humor and make it work so beautifully in a book that can still carry off the thrils, chills and the paranormal romance feel.

Charley Davidson is what you'd call a permanent Grim Reaper sort of a `Go to the Light' kind of gal/part-time private detective and a part time Albuquerque Police Department consultant. It doesn't hurt that her Uncle Bob or Ubie as she affectionately calls him is a big time respected detective who took over after her dad stepped down. Both highly respected because of Charley's skills of communing with the departed, all of whom make it much easier to solve a case. Of course nobody knows that but them but hey, a girls got to make a living!

With the help of her self-depreciating best friend and secretary, Cookie and some departed friends she helps solve a criminal case that I won't say a word about because I truly don't want to spoil this for anybody.
What I will say is that Charley is working one heck of a case with 3 departed lawyers that will cause all kinds of havoc in all areas of her life. Luckily, she has a lot of back-up with her Grim skills but that still doesn't keep her out of trouble or danger.

Also,Charley comes in to contact with one ay carumba hotty named Reyes that she met years ago when she was a teen and hasn't seen or heard of him since, he was the one that she felt an instant connection with and now, almost 10 years later, things start to get bizarre with Reyes, more than you could ever possibly imagine. She gets her fair share of bumps and bruises but throughout her life, there has always been a guardian angel around who somehow manages to save her from harm.

In summary, Charley's the girl I'd love to be or at the very least, have as my BFF! First Grave on the Right had me captivated until I read the very last word and even then I found myself thinking about her almost as a real person. Charley is very empowering!
Ms. Jones writing is so skillfully wicked, her characters so deliciously authentic and her world building is definitive and genuine. There is humor but there is also a delectable dark spine-tingling tension that runs through the book. All in all: It has it all!

I am eagerly anticipating the next in the series with bated breath.
