Product Description

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–Students and teachers of conversational Hebrew, as well as families interested in introducing the language, will appreciate this picture dictionary. Basic Hebrew words for parts of the body, members of the family, clothing, the house, school, playground, city, grocery store, bedtime, bath time, a birthday party, the zoo, the seasons, numbers, and colors are included. All are written in block letters with English transliteration and translation. Each spread includes a large, detailed illustration with the individual items clearly identified along the bottom. The color cartoon art is cheerful and contemporary. At the back of the book, a word list is organized alphabetically in English and includes the Hebrew words and corresponding page numbers. All in all, this is a wonderful resource. It's more sophisticated than Schlomo Peterseil's Fun with My First Words (Pitspopany, 2001), more child-friendly than Howard I. Bogot's My First 100 Hebrew Words (URJ Press, 1993), and less intimidating than Heather Amery's The First 1000 Words in Hebrew (Usborne, 1985).–Rachel Kamin, Temple Israel Libraries & Media Center, West Bloomfield, MI

4.0 out of 5 stars Teaching Hebrew to Children May 11 2013
Format:Library Binding|Verified Purchase
This is a good book for teaching beginning Hebrew. We wish "Shaloam" had been included in their list of words; however many of the root words are brought out and thus it's educational.
Hebrew has this "ord making process' that includes "compound' of words from roots. Beth meaning "house".
It might have been better for the author to emphasize more of the root words. However the book is a good start, colourful, and a valuable teaching tool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty nice April 24 2011

I'm a homeschooler and we were studying ancient Israel recently. I bought this book so my early elementary kids could learn something about Hebrew. I really liked the book, but I am only giving it four stars because there is no page with the alphabet on it! I thought the word lists included were great for beginners, and WONDERFUL how it includes the phonetic pronunciation in English along side the English and Hebrew spellings. But no alphabet page? It would have been perfect if only it had!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and well laid-out! Dec 19 2012

"My first Hebrew Word Book" is one I definitely recommend. The pages are broken up into categories (family, weather, clothing, etc) with both the Hebrew and English word for the item, which makes this book perfect for dual-language children, English-speaking children learning Hebrew, or even Hebrew-speaking children looking English. It would even be great for an adult trying to learn Modern Hebrew. If there's one book I could recommend to teach someone simple Hebrew words for every day objects this would be the one!

I just wanted to get a simple introduction to the Hebrew language. This book does this with a format of words and pictures. The vocabulary is extensive and grouped by subjects. The words are clearly written in Hebrew and in English. It is a great first Hebrew book for children or adults.
