When The Waterboys' Irish violinist Steve Wickham suggested to Mike Scott that Spiddal was a great place to get away from it all, no-one could have guessed how Scott would take his advice to heart. Within less than a year The Waterboys were transformed from stadium rock incumbents to adopted Irish folk-rockers. Fisherman's Blues is the entrancing outcome of that transition. If the family snapshot on the cover is to be taken at face value, one might imagine this to be an idyllic time in The Waterboys career. In truth, the sessions were painstaking, with Scott discarding over 50 songs over a two-year process. What remains though, is a classic of its time: from the yearning euphoria of the title track to otherworldly beauty of "When Ye Go Away", lent cohesion by the singularity of Scott's vision. For sheer inspiration and flow, precedents begin and end at Van Morrison's Astral Weeks--a doubly appropriate comparison, this, given Scott's superlative reading of Morrison's "Sweet Thing". --Peter Paphides

Product Description

2 CD set. The Waterboys were formed in London in 1981 and led by the singer/songwriter Mike Scott, the group's only constant member - with the supporting musicians ever changing around him. 1988's Fisherman's Blues is the Waterboys's 4th album for which the band were joined by traditional Irish players like fiddler Steve Wickham, drummer Dave Ruffy, keyboardist Guy Chambers and bassist Marco Weissman, resulting in a stripped-down, folky sound which was a marked step away from the 'big music' he founded and pursued in previous albums. It has been called their 'warmest and most rewarding record'. Complete with a bonus disc of 14 previously unreleased tracks and packaged in a digipack with pvc slipcase - it follows on from the successful re-issues of the first 3 Waterboys's albums 'The Waterboys', 'A Pagan Place' and 'This Is The Sea'. EMI.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Perfection! May 13 2012
By Emily
Format:Audio CD
This is probably the most beautiful and perfect CD ever. Everything about this album stirs up so many emotions while listening to it. Songs like "We Will Not Be Lovers" and "World Party" are faster, but still perfectly crafted. "Fishermans Blues" is by far the best track on here. The lyrics are just amazing. It really paints a picture in my mind. "The Strange Child" is one of my favorite poems of all time, and it being set to the fairie like flutes in the background, just brings chills up the spine.

This album is a MUST HAVE. Probably the closest you can get to perfection in one CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars I want to be a fisherman. Oct 19 2003

Format:Audio CD
This is one of those albums, that is so not what I normally listen to, and everytime I put it on, I love it even more. It's so refreshingly different from what's on the radio. I'm not sure where these guys are exactly from, but I can close my eyes and see them rocking some bar in County Cork, southern Ireland. The singers voice matches the music well, and it's all just a great mix of folk, punk, and traditional rock, with traditional instruments. The song "Fishermans Blues" was in the opening scene of the movie "Waking Ned Devine", and fits well there and here. Another favorite is "And a Bang on the Ear". It's so good, as is the rest of the album. I suggest fishing for this cd, you might get hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Celtic Masterpiece Mar 21 2008
By Pieter Uys HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This 4th album from 1988 by The Waterboys has now been enhanced. Fisherman's Blues represented a move to Celtic folk and includes Van Morrison's Sweet Thing and Dylan's Girl Of The North Country. The extra tracks all come from the same long recording session; the rest was released on the 2001 release Too Close To Heaven. My favorites include tuneful romps like And A Bang On The Ear, the title track, the spiritual songs Let Me Feel Holy Again and Meet Me At The Station, plus the breathtaking up-tempo Killing My Heart which is the closest this album comes to the "big music." This is an album of moving melodious music and poetic lyrics. The CD booklet includes an essay by Mike Scott, lovely photographs and information on every one of the songs.
