5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for reference and beginner to intermediate AS programmers, Nov 11 2010

I use this book since Flash 8 and I really like it.

I find it complete (covers the most common topics) and has a really easy learning curve (not with technical terms as you can see in other books like the O'Reilly ones). If you want to go further, I would suggest one of O'Reilly's book, but I really recommand starting with this one if you've never programmed before (or if you're not an advanced programmer in another language).

I skipped the Flash CS4 version because it still uses AS 3.0... but I was surprised with this version how it integrates a lot of new CS5 functionalities (along with the new text engine).

Really good book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and tutorial, April 10 2011

I was torn between 4 stars and 5. It's not perfect... it didn't telepathically cover every topic I wanted it to, and it could use a little flashier (no pun intended) design, but for the majority of questions I had, I found an answer in this well-written book.

My only nit-pick was I there were a couple of times when it said something in the vein of "You can't do this because of X" without really explaining X. Like saying "You can't eat yellow snow because it's yellow", rather than explaining why yellow snow is not good to eat. Sorry for the colorful analogy (pun intended).

All in all, it's amazing how much good information was crammed into a 500 page tutorial-style book. Highly recommended

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are interested only in authoring Flash projects using the drag-and-drop UI, and avoiding ActionScript as much as possible, this is not the book for you, but if you want to program Flash projects in ActionScript, this book is great. ActionScript rocks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tutorial, Jan 4 2011
By Kunal Bajpai "Ken" - Published on Amazon.com

I was completely new to the Flash when I took the Flash class at my college and got this book from amazon. Its a really good tutorial for beginners. Now I am pretty much ground up in Flash and can use Flash CS5 to create simple animations.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't get into the meaty issues, but still useful., Aug 5 2011

Overall, I did not think this book dealt with many 'Advanced' topics, rather, it's more of a handy guide that you can peruse when you want to find something neat to add to your website or flash file. Before I bought this book, I found out allot of this stuff just by googling my questions... meaning, a book wasn't necessary. If you have particular questions regarding xml and flash, actionscript coding, classes this is not the book for you. If you do want to learn some cool things you can do on the timeline with various images, sounds, masks etc, pick it up. However, I did like the clean format and how it is structure more like a guide than a long narrative.
