Review

“A beguiling Victorian mystery [with] an amiable gentleman sleuth cut from the same fine English broadcloth as Dorothy L. Sayers’s Lord Peter Wimsey.” —Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review

“Deftly plotted and richly detailed, The Fleet Street Murders is a taut Victorian thriller delivered from the pen of a master.” —Deanna Raybourn, author of Silent on the Moor

“Somewhere in detective heaven, Sherlock Holmes and Lord Peter Wimsey are already preparing a glass of hot whiskey for Mr. Charles Lenox. This suave and flinty sleuth has a gorgeously dangerous future ahead of him, and so do lovers of Victorian mysteries.”  —Louis Bayard, author of The Black Tower

“This third entry in Finch’s series shows the author at his confident best, with a well-conceived story [and] an honorable and amiable hero.” —Richmond Times-Dispatch

“A charming and intelligent mystery series. . . . Finch effortlessly evokes a tone fitting the Victorian times, and that is a large part of his novel’s charm.” —The Oregonian

Book Description

Called “absorbing” (Publishers Weekly) and “beguiling” (The New York Times Book Review), The Fleet Street Murders finds gentleman detective Charles Lenox investigating the mysterious, simultaneous deaths of two veteran newspapermen, while engaged in a heated race for Parliament.

It’s Christmas, 1866, and amateur sleuth Charles Lenox, recently engaged to his best friend, Lady Jane Grey, is happily celebrating the holiday in his Mayfair townhouse.  Across London, however, two journalists have just met with violent deaths—one shot, one throttled. Lenox soon involves himself in the strange case, but must leave it behind to go north to Stirrington, where he is running for Parliament. Once there, he gets a further shock when Lady Jane sends him a letter whose contents may threaten their nuptials.

In London, the police apprehend two unlikely and unrelated murder suspects. From the start, Lenox has his doubts; the crimes, he is sure, are tied. But how? Racing back and forth between London and Stirrington, Lenox must negotiate the complexities of crime and politics, not to mention his imperiled engagement. But as the case mounts, Lenox learns that the person behind the murders may be closer to him—and his beloved—than he knows.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting mystery, April 4 2010
This review is from: The Fleet Street Murders (Paperback)
I picked up this book on a whim and was pleasantly surprised as I began to read it. This is the third mystery novel in a series by the author, Charles Finch. He has created his own detective called Charles Lenox. The author has done a good job of developing the character and idiosyncrasies of Lenox in his three books. However, the writing is at times jerky and the dialogue scenes between characters appear constrained and stifled. The author should make his writing more relaxed and recount dialogue scenes, especially those in indirect speech, more smoothly. Also, a few of the main characters like Graham, Lady Jane etc can be fleshd out better. The editing of this book has not been done carefully enough- I caught some errors among the pages.
All said , the author has good plots and feeds the reader one clue at a time in a manner suspenseful enough to keep the reader engrossed till the end. I look forward to reading more of the Lenox mysteries in the future. I am also grateful to the author for writing good fiction without a single cuss word or R-rated scene in an age when all other writers seem to be doing so. This book is suitable for childen and teens. Though not as great as Arthur Conan Doyle or Agatah Christie, Charles Finch is definitely in their line. I hope he improves his writing further. That will ensure a successful career for him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Treat - The Fleet Street Murders, Nov 27 2009
By Linda Bock "Doc Boc" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Fleet Street Murders (Hardcover)
Charles Finch & his Mr. Lenox have me hooked. "Beautiful Blue Death" was a delight, but "Fleet Street Murders" tops them all. My only disappointment was that the book came to an end & left me hungry for more. (I have the same reaction to chocolate, too.) Charles Finch has given detective Lenox more depth to his gentleman's nature. Lenox feels the grip of being torn by several worlds at one time with his election campaign demands, his love tensions & his desire to solve crime. Other characters such as Toto, Dallington, Dr. McConnell, Jenkins, Edmund & Lady Jane are becoming more complex as well. Even the minor characters have surprising roles to play. The prologue was so concise, that it merited numerous re-reads as the tale unfolded. In addition to plot, characters & suspense, the book also illuminates the history of the period with flavorful bits of information about architecture, government & travel. Like any good chocoholic, I am fiending for the next book. What a sweet treat, "The Fleet Street Murders", has been & I can hardly wait for the next book!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great installment in the Charles Lenox series., Dec 30 2009

Another excellent story in the Charles Lenox series. This one is the third. The plot is a little more involved in this one--more lines, I think, than in the last two.

Followers of the series will remember that at the end of the second installment--The September Society--Lenox proposed marriage to Lady Jane Grey and was asked to stand for a seat in Parliament. Here, despite the pressures of campaigning in a rural area, he is trying to keep abreast of the developments in two seemingly linked murders back in London and maintain his relationship with Lady Jane.

I can highly recommend this book. I certainly hope Mr. Finch continues to favour us with the Lenox series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth as Silk, Dec 13 2009

This latest installment of Mr Finch's wonderful hero, Carles Lenox, is a well-crafted story with rich characterization and smooth plot twists. A couple of previous story lines are tied up in this novel, some of which are rather surprising. The love interest is a bit mysterious in itself. I think that Lenox's fiancée might have some sexual "issues," but the genre that Mr Finch has adopted makes delving into that realm out-of-bounds. Still, the mystery is a satisfying page-turner, well-written and captivating.
