Book Description

March 29 2004 Frank Elder Mysteries
Fifteen years ago Susan Blacklock disappeared. Although Detective Inspector Frank Elder has taken early retirement, the case still plagues his mind. Prime suspects Shane Donald and Alan McKiernan were convicted a year later of the brutal rape and murder of a young girl, and now that Shane has been granted parole, Elder feels compelled to revisit his past.

Then Shane disappears and another young girl is murdered. Elder’s involvement is now crucial. Taunted by postcards from the killer, an increasingly desperate Elder battles to keep his estranged family from being drawn into the very heart of the crime.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another gritty read June 22 2014

I usually avoid authors whose books have become TV staples and hence did not realise that John Harvey wrote crime fiction other than the Resnick books.- the Frank Elder series is good down to earth crime fiction - not for the sqeamish, though - there are only a few in this series, so I have read a couple of Resnick books and realise that my foolish bias was just that. If you like Rankin or Connelly you'll like Harvey.

Had me hooked all the way through a real page turner good story line and well written a great read
3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Nov. 18 2010
By David Dutch - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was disappointed for after reading the blurb on the front of the book by Mark Billingham I thought that I was in for a gripping and powerfully atmospheric thriller. I was lured into buying a copy to see if Harvey was in the same mould as Tom Cain certainly the reviews on the back cover would indicate he was.

Instead I found a story line that was drawn out - a retired detective inspector cannot leave an unsolved disappearance of a sixteen year old girl many years before alone and then came the release, on licence, of the man he thought had been party to her disappearance but was unable to prove at the time. Haunted by a recurring nightmare he decided to retrace his steps when first trying to solve the mystery and found not only himself but his estranged wife and daughter becoming entwined in the dangerous pursuit of this known killer.

Was the nightmare a clue to the unsolved disappearance or a prophetic vision of what was to become.

At times the storyline was good but personally I did not find it a page turner keeping me awake until I sought to solve the mystery before the end of the story.
