Product Description

From Amazon.com

Gregory McDonald's lightweight mystery novel about an undercover newspaper reporter cracking a police drug ring is transformed by screenwriter Andrew Bergman (Blazing Saddles, and writer/director of The Freshman and Honeymoon in Vegas) into a fairly sarcastic and occasionally very funny Chevy Chase vehicle. Enjoyment of the film pivots on whether you find Chase's flippant, smart-ass brand of verbal humor funny, or merely egocentric. If you don't like Chase, there's really no one else worth watching (Geena Davis is sadly underused). Chase seems born to play I.M. "Fletch" Fletcher, a disillusioned investigative reporter whose cynicism and detached view on life mirrors the actor's understated approach to comedy. Fletcher offers Chase the opportunity to adopt numerous personas, as his job requires numerous (bad) physical disguises, and much of film's humor centers on the ridiculous idea that any of these phony accents or bad hairpieces could fool anyone. These not-so-clever disguises are put to use when Fletch becomes involved in the film's smart but continually self-mocking two-part mystery. As well as trying to gather drug-smuggling evidence against the LAPD for a long-overdue newspaper story, a rich and apparently terminally ill stranger also offers Fletch a large payoff to kill him. While the film does a fairly good job juggling both of these plots, not to mention tossing in a love interest as well, it's subservient, for better or worse, to Chase's memorable one-liners and disguises. Followed by two forgettable sequels that lack both the original's wit and Chase's attention span. The DVD version includes production notes and a theatrical trailer, and is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1:85 to 1. --Dave McCoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Fletch...........Comedy At Its Best!, Feb 7 2012

This review is from: Fletch Collection (DVD)
Fletch is simply one of the best comedy creations to ever hit the silver screen.

In Fletch you get to see Chevy Chase at the very top of his comedic element. Every actor has a high point in their career, and Chevy reached that point when he invented the Genius Character known as "Fletch"

I was only 7 years old when Fletch hit the theatres and it instantly became one of my all time favorite comedies EVER.

Chevy plays a slap-sticky, yet extremely clever and witty news reporter named Irwin Fletcher who writes for a Los Angeles news paper under the name Jane Doe. Fletch goes under cover and lives on a sketchy L.A. Beach to investigate drug trafficking when he ends up getting involved with a much bigger and deeper conspiracy of murder, drugs and police corruption.

Working undercover Chase plays several different Hillarious characters that will keep you laughing right till the end of the movie. He plays a bum, a doctor, a laywer, an air plane mechanic, and even a pro-basketball player! And yet he delivers all of them into a rather well written who-dunnit mystery that also keeps you happily intrigued.

The soundtrack is Classic and is written by Harold Faltermeyer (The same guy behind the Beverly Hills Cop Theme)

4 Years later we have the Sequel "Fletch Lives" which is the second part of this package. Chase once again delivers his brilliant Character of Fletch in a new and fresh story line where he has apparently inherrited a plantation in Louisiana. Upon arriving, Fletch's aunt's lawyer is murdered, leaving Fletch to unravel the mystery. In order to find out who the real killers and clear his name, Fletch once again pulls off a series of disguises and infiltrates the congregation of television evangelist.

All in all the Fletch Movies get my highest regard as simply "Excellent" and entertaining. I recommend this set to anyone who is seeking a really well written, directed, and super funny comedy series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fletch Collection DVD short review, Aug 21 2008

Got The Fletch Collection in the mail from Amazon yesterday (8/20/08). Fletch is the same exact disc that is found in the "Jane Doe" edition and Fletch Lives is the same blue disc as in the previous dvd release, that is still available for purchase. The set is almost identical to the "Jane Doe" edition in the sense that there's a slip cover and a single dvd case with a "flipper". There is no digi-pak here folks. The only special features are the same ones on the "Jane Doe" edition. Fletch is in 5.1 Dolby and Fletch Lives only has 2.0 Dolby. Both are in 1.85:1 anamorphic.
Great buy if you don't own either or if you want to upgrade to save a slight bit of space.
