4.0 out of 5 stars Some good cultural & faith analysis, Feb 8 2009
By T. Underwood (Waterloo, Ontario) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I would have given it a 4.5/5 if I could. I would have given it 5/5 but it got a little weak near the end.

My highlights would be:

-how the east and west differ starting with the alphabet; phonetic vs ideographic; linear, sequential vs nonlinear, holistic
-after the printing press, church seating started to mirror the page of a book; pews, aisles, columns, rows
-oral tradition (community) gave way to written (individual) - to personal quiet time, eroding the communal nature of faith
-printing makes us think in abstract terms, vs oral tradition was more around stories and practical matters
-the telegraph (Morse) was the first (historic) disconnect of communication from context (local and historic); mosaic of unrelated headlines
-society lived on printed (left-brain) for more than 400 yrs
-the invention of the photograph began to exercise the right-brain

I feel that he could have said more about the effect of web2.0/3.0 and social media f-book, twitter on faith and culture. But that may be the substance of a follow-up ebook, blog discussion, or whitepaper! ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read and interesting ideas worth exploring, Oct 11 2009
By Jordan Majeau (Edmonton, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews

I trully enjoy books where you have the opportunity to explore ideas and gain a great comprehension on various subjects. Flickering Pixels is one of those books. Before reading this book, I was only vaguely familiar with some of the ideas that came from Marshal Mcluhan, but by the end of the book, I felt like I had a better understanding of some of those ideas.

Essentially this is a book on how media both modern and otherwise affects the Christian faith. He dives into some of the mechanics, but ultimately the book pushes the reader in a direction that makes them reflect on how they respond to the messages they receive everyday. He presents the ideas clearly and concisely. Some authors could take this subject and ramble for about 300-400 pages. Mr. Hipps pulls it off wonderfuly just over 200.

The book does have a strong "afterburn" effect in that you still continue to exercise some of these ideas in your mind after reading it. My only knock to the book, is that some of the "postmodern" and "emergent" ideas can be found elsewhere and so some of the ideas were old hat to me.

I do recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about communication and Christian ethics.
