Great great movie!!!, May 7 2012
This review is from: Flight of Dragons (DVD)
I honestly don't see the problem with this movie(I'm looking you 1 star rating givers). Also complain about the animation all you want it's an old movie (made in 1982). Below is what the movie is about and honestly it's quite brilliant. I also read some place that their child didn't grasp the story, when I was young I could tell you what it was about, with any movie you need to make sure that you child can comprehend the content in it. Yes even with children movies.
Here is the description of the movie from IMDB. "This is an animated movie based on the book by Peter Dickinson. In this movie the realm of magic is being threatened by the realm of logic, so Carolinus, the green wizard decides to shield it for all time. Ommedon, the evil red wizard, stands in his way. Carolinus then calls for a quest that is to be led by a man named Peter Dickinson, who is the first man of both the realms of science and magic. It is Peter's job to defeat Ommedon."
If you don't like fantasy movies or can't get over the fact that the animation was done in 1982 than I wouldn't buy this movie, I will say you are missing out on a fantastic journey! This is a hidden gem of a movie!

This is my childhood right there. I remember watching and re-watching this movie that we had taped on a VHS long ago. Many people have movies they deeply moved as children that they could watch over and over without being tired of it. This was mine.
To be honest, the art and animations are miles away from current standards, but the story was good and appealed to young me. The story is more mature than that of most other movies for kids, but in my opinion that just makes it a movie with a wider appeal that you can watch again as a teenager or even an adult, seeking a taste of their own youth. The story takes a lot of elements from fantasy clichés, which makes it especially interesting for creative youngsters who are attracted to tales of knights and dragons, as I was.
There are also dark and sad scenes and it can be pretty serious at times. People and animals, good and bad, die in this movie. And not just "going to sleep", but in scenes of violence.
The story is basically this: the world of science of man is intruding on the world of magic, so the 4 wizards who rule it gather to decide what to do. 3 of them agree to build a barrier to separate the two worlds for good, letting both continue to exist, but the evil red wizard wishes instead to use magic to influence the world of men to destroy itself from the inside by laying waste to the Earth, so that he can rule the ruins. To fight him, one of the wizard summons a man of science from our modern world, but because of a magical mishap, he ends up in the body of a young dragon. There starts a quest to end the evil wizard's power by destroying his artifact of power, his crown.
You can say that the story is just classic, nothing really new or thrilling... but classics are classics for a reason, because they appeal to us and just work. It's the case here.
I highly recommend this, especially since it's out on DVD now.

I so want to buy this!, Dec 31 2010
This review is from: Flight of Dragons (DVD)
I loved this unique animated film when I was a kid. It has a great story--The Flight of Dragons deals with the broader questions of the tangible vs. the intangible, the destructiveness of greed. The movie is appropriate for children, but it's not cutesy, so adults can enjoy it too. Anyone who liked the Dungeons and Dragons Saturday morning cartoon and the Neverending Story will like the Flight of Dragons. The sound track is hauntingly good. Spoiler Alert: Here's how the story starts: a bright science-major, Peter Dickenson, gets bored with his studies, so he turns his back on it all and starts work on a book called "The Flight of Dragons". He designs a board game with four wizards and a beautiful maiden, Melisande...he gets magically transported into the game where he meets Carolinus, the Green Wizard (with the voice from someone from M*A*S*H))...he meets and learns about dragons and the other three wizards (including Omadon, the Red Wizard, voiced over by THE James Earl Jones), who threatens to slowly destroy the magical realm and beyond. Peter gets sent on a good old fashioned quest with fantastical characters... I so want to see it again!
