Product Description

From Amazon

Juli Baker devoutly believes in three things: the sanctity of trees (especially her beloved sycamore), the wholesomeness of the eggs she collects from her backyard flock of chickens, and that someday she will kiss Bryce Loski. Ever since she saw Bryce's baby blues back in second grade, Juli has been smitten. Unfortunately, Bryce has never felt the same. Frankly, he thinks Juli Baker is a little weird--after all, what kind of freak raises chickens and sits in trees for fun? Then, in eighth grade, everything changes. Bryce begins to see that Juli's unusual interests and pride in her family are, well, kind of cool. And Juli starts to think that maybe Bryce's brilliant blue eyes are as empty as the rest of Bryce seems to be. After all, what kind of jerk doesn't care about other people's feelings about chickens and trees? With Flipped, mystery author Wendelin Van Draanen has taken a break from her Sammy Keyes series, and the result is flipping fantastic. Bryce and Juli's rants and raves about each other ring so true that teen readers will quickly identify with at least one of these hilarious feuding egos, if not both. A perfect introduction to the adolescent war between the sexes. (Ages 12 to 14) --Jennifer Hubert --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly

Two distinct, thoroughly likable voices emerge in Van Draanen's (the Sammy Keyes series) enticing story, relayed alternately by eighth graders Bryce and Juli. When Juli moved in across the street from Bryce, just before second grade, he found the feisty, friendly girl overwhelming and off-putting, and tried to distance himself from her but then eighth grade rolls around. Within the framework of their complex, intermittently antagonistic and affectionate rapport, the author shapes insightful portraits of their dissimilar families. Among the most affecting supporting characters are Bryce's grandfather, who helps Juli spruce up her family's eyesore of a yard after Bryce makes an unkind remark about the property, and Juli's father, a deep-feeling artist who tries to explain to his daughter how a painting becomes more than the sum of its parts. Juli finally understands this notion after she discovers the exhilaration of sitting high in a beloved tree in her neighborhood ("The view from my sycamore was more than rooftops and clouds and wind and colors combined"). Although the relationship between Bryce's grandfather and his own family remains a bit sketchy, his growing bond with Juli is credibly and poignantly developed. A couple of coincidences are a bit convenient, but Van Draanen succeeds in presenting two entirely authentic perspectives on the same incidents without becoming repetitious. With a charismatic leading lady kids will flip over, a compelling dynamic between the two narrators and a resonant ending (including a clever double entendre on the title), this novel is a great deal larger than the sum of its parts. Ages 10-14.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put the book down!, May 1 2012
This review is from: Flipped (Paperback)
I read this book from cover to cover in a single night because I was so into it. I loved the alternating viewpoints, and the way that this book is entirely possible. I loved the style of writing, and found myself hanging onto the book a little tighter at the very end of it. I'm interested in reading more by this author.

This review is from: Flipped (Paperback)
Wendelin Van Draanen is the author of the SAMMY KEYES series, but if you are looking for a funny mystery, FLIPPED is not the book for you. This book is something totally different. FLIPPED does just what the title says; the story is told from two alternating viewpoints: the boy and the girl. It begins when they are 7 years old and ends when they are 13. And boy do they have a lot to learn about relationships and love! Juli learns that to-die-for blue eyes are not the best reason in the world to fall in love. Bryce learns that people who live in houses with dumpy yards might be cool people.

Bryce's first concern with Juli is definitely not her house. It's Juli herself. The girl won't leave him alone! She runs over while his family is still moving in, climbs into the moving van, and absolutely takes over. It's downhill all the way from there. Bryce runs through most of the book, sometimes literally, just to stay away from her.

And of course, Juli sees all this from an entirely different perspective. The guy needs help in life; she's more than happy to give it to him. Besides, his eyes make her feel weak all over. Sometimes, she just sits in her driveway and stares at his house, wondering why he won't come out.

Kids aren't the only ones in this book who have things to learn, either. So do parents. There's an eye-opener! And if you read it, you'll come to see things differently, yourself. Like, should you be honest or should you be polite? And what do appearances have to do with reality?

You'll want to read this book to find out what happens when everything flips and Bryce stops running from Juli and she starts running from him. Is there something more to Juli than a dumpy yard? Is Bryce nothing but a gorgeous pair of blue eyes? Are these two made for each other, or should they avoid each other like the plague?

5.0 out of 5 stars sweet!!!, May 18 2008

This review is from: Flipped (Paperback)
this book was so adorable! i read it in a couple of hours, i was hooked from the first page.

it's the story about two kids, a girl and a boy, and how they feel about each other as they grow older. it was decently written and was more complex than i initially assumed it would be. at first glance this looks like your typical story of unrequited love, girl loves boy, boy wants nothing to do with girl. but actually the story is actually much more than this. the girl, julie, is a headstrong, genuine person who lives her life with conviction. hearing a summary of the book you would assume that she is some spineless, wilting heroine who feels like she needs a boy to know who she is, but she's just the opposite. the reason she goes after bryce the way that she does is because she puts 150% into everything she does. she's a dreamer and an activist, one of those people who you meet only once in a lifetime.. if you're lucky. bryce comes to realize this, and by getting to know her, comes to see how prejudiced and superficial he is.

the story is told by both bryce and julie, and they take turns telling the reader what happened chapter by chapter. and, as one might assume, the story starts off with the girl being obsessed with the boy and the boy wanting nothing to do with the girl. since this is a romance of sorts i would assume that would would be able to fabricate the basic plot line from that information, so i won't 'spoil' it for you.

the characters go through self discovery and heartbreak. there is a theme of 'breaking free of one's old mentality' and embracing a passion for life and the main characters emphasize this transition (or the state of being if not the actual transition itself... though the moving from one state to the other is the most fascinating aspect and would be the crux of the story).

i really love finding stories like this. it's a sweet, innocent romance (in the actual sense of the word, not in the smutty sense), but with some depth to it which makes the story all the more real and palpable. you get to watch these kids grow into the people they will be. julie is such a free spirit, though you don't quite expect this right away as bryce starts off the first chapter, i really enjoyed her character. and bryce gets an inner strength as he grows older that represents a real struggle for the individual's own self awareness.

the ending was somewhat unsatisfying because it kind of left the reader hanging... and it was excellent because of that. this isn't a story about dating, it's about before that happens, when you first discover love. you can tell the author did an excellent job with this because you're left wanting more, you want to know how it will end. we as the western audience we are crave the 'honeymoon' phase, even if it means destroying true love just to have somewhere to start all over again. this book gives the reader hints of the honeymoon phase, but doesn't go into it, leaves the reader at the cusp of what could be.

much more amazing than i initially assumed it would be, this book is great and i recommend it.
