Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In Porter's second dip into the chick lit pool (after The Frog Prince), Seattle single mom Jackie Laurens begins wondering how important happiness is: divorced with two kids and a thriving decorating business, she assumes she's happy, but can't help feeling like something's missing. When her married friend, Anne, arranges for the two of them to indulge in a Hawaiian getaway in honor of Jackie's 40th birthday, Jackie agrees. Anne backs out at the last second, but Jackie decides to suffer through the vacation solo. Hawaii is gorgeous, but the hotel pool deck groans under the weight of middle-aged men whose coarse chutzpah is only overshadowed by their flabby bellies. Just before she resigns herself to the depressing prospects, she meets Kai, a sexy, tan and much younger surfing instructor. Life doesn't get better, only more complicated as Jackie tries to balance the sultry, sweaty joys of Hawaii and Kai with the obligations of motherhood. Porter's romance roots show in the gratuitous sex scenes and in how easily tears flow from Jackie's eyes, but this book fits the bill as a calorie-free accompaniment for a poolside daiquiri. (July)

From Booklist

Divorced with two kids, Jackie Laurens is facing her fortieth birthday, and she is depressed. Hr friend Anne decides that they should go to Hawaii to celebrate but backs out once they're at the airport. So, Jackie goes solo. She has never done anything like this before and is full of trepidation. The trip turns into a series of firsts, including surfing lessons and sex with Kai, her young, hunky instructor. Jackie realizes it's a cliche, but she can't stop thinking of Kai after she gets home. Over the next few months, she makes several return trips to the island. Even though her friends are no longer supportive of her, Jackie can't let go of Kai--until her daughter is hospitalized while Jackie is away. Riddled with guilt, she breaks off the relationship, but what she thinks is the end is only the beginning of her issues with Kai. Readers of a certain age will find much to empathize with in this amusing, poignant, and compelling story. Maria Hatton

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun & Breezy beach read, Dec 8 2008

This review is from: Flirting with Forty (Paperback)
Rating: 3.5

This book was an incredibly fast read for me. I would describe it as the ideal beach read because it is light and fun, plus half of the book does take place in Hawaii! Jane's writing style made Jackie's character seem incredibly real and I found myself rooting for her until the very end. As I was reading the book, I could easily envision Jackie and her irrational and yet powerful feelings for Kai.

My only real issue with this book is the ending itself. I don't want to give anything away but I just didn't find the book's conclusion sufficiently realistic. Nonetheless, Flirting with Forty is a fun and breezy read. I look forward to delving into the other books by Jane Porter in the future!

4.0 out of 5 stars Age is just a number, Dec 7 2008

Luanne Ollivier - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (#1 HALL OF FAME)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Flirting with Forty (Paperback)
Flirting with Forty tells the story of Jackie. It's her second year as a divorced woman. Her two kids live with her and she loves them to death, but there's something definitely lacking in her life. It's bad enough that her husband left her for a younger woman, but her fortieth birthday is looming. Her friend Anne takes decisive action - she books them into a resort in Hawaii for a getaway. But when the time comes, Anne can't go. Jackie takes a deep breath and decides to going alone.

"I remember loving my husband and children. I remember loving them, and somewhere I must have stopped loving me... "

After sitting by the pool alone and watching movies in her room, she makes a decision.....

"I want more. More happiness. More love. More laughter. More sex. More of everything. I want to be everything I know I am.

It is at a surfboarding lesson that she meets Kai - a young, sexy, muscular, laid back, surfer kind of guy. She is very attracted to him, but he's younger and lives life to a different rhythm. What would he see in her?

Does she or doesn't she? Does she find happiness? Or answers with heartache? What about her ex?- after all the kids want them to get back together. And her friends - what would they think? I had to force myself not to flip to the back of the book and read the last chapter midway through.

Jane Porter has put to paper many questions I think a lot of women have asked themselves at some point in their lives. Written with humor and empathy, Jackie's character is true to life. The idea for this novel came when Porter was on holiday in Hawaii. (Did I mention she's dating a surfer?) It's a delicious read combining chick lit, romance and some thought provoking ideas all in one.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Journey - A Must Read for Women of all ages, Jun 15 2006
By
Marilyn Shoemaker (Seattle, Washington) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Flirting with Forty (Paperback)
Flirting with Forty is a must read for all women whether single or in a relationship as one learns though the main character's journey to "be all that you can be". It's a story so profound it will have you laughing and crying at the same time. It's a story of dreams, hope and learning to be comfortable with one's self.

Once I began the journey with the author, I honestly couldn't put it down. I saw so much of myself as a mother, as a wife and as a woman. Just reading the story made me want to want more for me!

As the character Jackie points out sometimes we loose ourselves along the way. We get so caught up in life that we loose ourselves and we blindly accept fate. So, what's wrong with taking a chance, having an adventure, discovering your self, receiving pleasure? Absolutely nothing!

This book is not just about falling in love; it's about relationships, friendships and finding the courage to grow. As Jane points out, "growing up doesn't have to mean growing old". Amen

Jane Porter again has outdone herself with this incredible story for women of all ages. It's personally given me the courage to begin anew, to explore options and yes, "to be all that I can be"!
