Book Description

In terms of sheer number of parks and total annual visitors, Florida has one of the nation’s top three state park systems. Abundant shoreline, lakes, rivers, swamps, and marshes host an amazing array of wildlife, including bald eagles and orchids. This guide takes visitors hiking, camping, snorkeling, scuba diving, cycling and more-from sandy beaches to pine forests to stunning coral reefs.

Before tall, white hotels grew along Florida's southeast coast, before Disney filled Florida's midlands with amusement, before golf courses and marinas edged the sea, Florida was a natural beauty. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book to Explore "The Real Florida"!, July 7 2007

This review is from: Florida State Parks: A Complete Recreation Guide (Paperback)
This book is our favorite guide to exploring Florida's natural wonders, and there are many. It gives the most useful information of any I've found. If you would rather see real nature instead of fake (Disney animation) this is the book.
We keep it in our RV and plan trips with it.
What amazes me is that the author is from Washington state and knows so much about Florida.
The only thing that could make it better are two things: color photos and a better map of the parks with an overlay showing both major cities as well as the parks, to give a better sense of where they are located. It would be too crowded to put them all on one map so an overlay would be preferable. I had to use a car map in conjunction with the book map to plan trips, no big deal.
Just got back from Manatee Springs and Cedar Key. Florida springs are totally cool (double-ent. intended).

3.0 out of 5 stars good reference book, Aug 10 2009
By L. B. Taylor - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Florida State Parks: A Complete Recreation Guide (Paperback)
I enjoyed using this book as a reference point but, honestly, some of the information is dated. If you don't have access to the web then this is a great book to have. But if you do I would recommend using their site first for current information. Has a hiking trail been closed? Is their a special event going on this weekend? Have they forbidden swimming temporarily? All valid questions to want answers to and problems we have run into before leaving to visit a park.

Just a gentle reminder, this book is about state parks. We live near a national forest and none of their landmarks are referenced here. So finding information on Juniper Springs or Silver Glen because they are part of the national park system can't be found in this book.

this book is a must have for poeple looking for fun on a budget. State parks are very inexpensive and offer lots to see and do or you can just find one to lounge in the sun and do nothing. We use this to plan family and scout outings.
