Product Description

The experiment conducted with the 2002 revival of Flower Drum Song may be one of the most audacious ever attempted on Broadway. Despite being a hit for Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1958, the show had never been revived. It was felt that it hadn¹t aged gracefully, its depiction of Chinese-Americans in San Francisco having come under criticism. So playwright David Henry Hwang rewrote the book, shuffling the order of the songs to fit his purpose and completely recontextualizing them in the process. Centering the action on the Golden Pearl Theater, the new Flower Drum Song now has a huge show-within-a-show component, which allows the staging of some of the most sensitive numbers in a pointedly stylized setting. Arranger and musical director David Chase has dusted the cobwebs off the score, and the music pulses with vitality, notably in the two irresistible songs in the middle of the show: "Fan Tan Fannie" is now a hip-shaking number that incorporates '60s surf elements, while "Chop Suey" explodes in a brassy big-band fever. Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon) is quite good in the starring role and confirms her gift for ballads. But watch for Sandra Allen's slinky rendition of "I Enjoy Being a Girl" and "Fan Tan Fannie." Purists can scream all they want; this new recording is ace. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3.0 out of 5 stars A Nice CD, but... May 2 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Not one of R&H's best musicals. While their other shows have a few well known songs this one only has a couple.

Ive seen the play at Broadway and if you're expecting a miss saigon or les miz then its not.. but its great and entertaining... what makes it outstanding... Ms. Salonga's brilliant, clear and pure voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING RECORDING! April 29 2004

Great vocals, great music and instrumentation, great mix. An outstanding accompaniment to a charming revisical.
One of the best shows to ever grace the stage and a Grammy-nominated album that's leaps better than the overrated, annoyingly squeeky-sounding, and fluff Hairspray.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! March 5 2004

Format:Audio CD
I saw this musical when it opened in Los Angeles a couple of years ago and am not surprised that 'till today, it continues to get rave reviews from critics all over the country (save for two New York critics who don't understand the Asian American framework from which David Henry Hwang's work is structured) for its outstanding production values. As many, many reviewers have pointed out, alll the elements come together neatly in this musical, which is quite rare. The ensemble is particularly strong (each member of the cast is strong) and the songs and music remain wonderful to listen to despite the revisions.
The CD is equally outstanding. The sound is clear and crisp and even the packaging is creative (love the fan!) Of course, nothing beats seeing the production since the CD contains only the songs, not the dialogues (and you should see the wonderful, colorful costumes!) If they can't come to your city, however, this is the next best thing. A very, very, good thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE musical to see! Feb. 26 2004
By David
Format:Audio CD
I've seen Flower Drum Song twice -- on Broadway and in Dallas -- and the cast never ceases to amaze me. They're consistently great. While no one beats Lea Salonga's performance as Mei-Li (her voice and presence alone are enough to enthrall and hold the audience), understudy Yuka Takara (who's doing the tour) proves she can do justice to the role (particularly impressive in the dance movements) and can command the stage. Male lead Jose Llana is another bright spot in this musical, delivering a powerful and memorable perforemance as Ta.
I'm not suprised that the show and the cast have been abundantly showered with praises fom critics from all the cities it has performed in (from its opening in Los Angeles to its tour in Sacramento), and that it has received accolades and nominations from at least seven award-giving bodies, with performances even videotaped for the archives of the Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts!
The cast recording is outstanding performance-wise and production-wise, so I'm also not surprised that it was one of the strongest contenders for Musical Cast Album of the Year in the recent Grammys (it really was the best -- Flower Drum Song's ensemble alone beats any show's ensemble for that year -- but of course, as expected, the award had to go to the good-but-overrated show with the legendary star).
Watch out for the touring production and definitely get a copy of the impressive recording!

Indeed, very high quality recording of an equally brilliant show. The excellent vocals comnplement the excellent music; the creative jacket, a feast for the eyes, adds a fine, finishing touch. A definite amazon.com must-buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Topnotch recording for an outstanding musical! Feb. 7 2004

This is the perfect recording for a beautifully re-written musical that -- surprisingly, in a racist theater environment -- recognizes that Asians and Asian Americans are around us.
Performed by a very talented cast (led by Olivier & Tony winner Lea Salonga), this musical is one of those rare shows that have all elements (music, story, cast, costumes, choreography, etc.) working together really well.
The CD is first-rate. From vocals to sound engineering to packaging, everything is impressive.
Go get the CD and see the touring production. This is one of the best shows to ever hit the theatrical circuit.
