I'm one of the thousands of people who saw this show during its recent Broadway run and loved it. Thanks to David Henry Hwang, my last memory of this classic is NOT the one mocked my people, the one that perpetuated offensive stereotypes of Chinese/Chinese-Americans. Thanks to David Chase, the already beautiful score was made more poignant with the integration of American '60s and Chinese instrumentation. Thanks to Robert Longbottom, the show moved smoothly from one scene to the next, with FDS' graceful actors (in dazzling costumes) performing their wonderful choreography. Thanks to the cast, led by the very talented Lea Salonga, the moving songs really soared. Amon such songs was the powerful "Love, Look Away." The emotion required was that of utter frustration (this is NOT your fancy, inspirational love song) and that was exactly how Lea Salonga performed it (also showcased on the CD). Her face, her body, and her vocal attack provided for a perfect scene, and her crystal clear voice only made it more mesmerizing!
This show is fantastic. While the superb CD can't capture the entire beauty of this musical (e.g., all the spoken lines are excluded), this is the next best thing.
A treat for amazon.com customers!
