Book Description

May 1 2004
Internationally acclaimed quilt and fibre artist, Kumiko Sudo translates techniques designed to create extraordinary shapes from paper to a new medium - fabric. Crafters are shown how to effortlessly fold fabric into wonderful new designs, adding dimension and sophistication to any sewing or home decoration project. Patterns for 24 simple yet stylish projects are included for using the flower origami to create such things as exquisite purses, totes, gift boxes, needle cases, and even a cell phone holder. While some of the designs are enhanced with colourful beads, ribbons, or tiny mother-of-pearl, others require no embellishments at all. Clear directions, step-by-step drawings, and full-size templates for every design make it easy for anyone to re-create the projects to perfection with only novice sewing skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring book! Oct 7 2008
By Ekaterina Miltimore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am very pleased with this book. I've been waiting quite anxiously for it and was able to create 3 flowers last night after the book had arrived. First of all, it is a very visually pleasing book. Watercolors and calligraphy by the author decorate pages from beginning to end, lending the book a very artful flair. Secondly, instructions are very thorough, photographs are excellent. Also, what I really liked is that while each flower is a part of a mini-quilt, the book is structured so that you are able to get clear understanding of how to complete the folded flower itself if you were choosing to use it for something other than this mini-quilt.
A couple of reasons I am giving it 4 stars:
while I find instructional drawings sufficient, I can see how some could benefit from maybe larger drawings or more visual directions (such as arrows or side views)
about 80% of the projects result in a square shape, which is not quite a natural shape of the flower. While it is origami and it is hard to fold on a curve, or create a curve via folding, a handful of flowers in the book have more naturalistic shapes, and I would wish to see more of that.

Overall, excellent resource and a great starting point!

5.0 out of 5 stars What fun! May 26 2010

Kumiko Sudo's books are of consistent high quality; this one is a real gem in my library. Each page is a delight to the eye and filled with imaginative flower designs just begging to be made. Individual projects are small; directions are expressed clearly and the diagrams are perfect. The last section of the book includes template designs according to project. The Flower Origami Templates (basic shapes) are well worth the investment. Though this craft is not for everyone, everyone can enjoy the artistry of folded fabric! Buy this book and you're well on your way to a satisfying and fun challenge.
