A good collection of various songs, but . . .,

This review is from: Flowers (Audio CD)
I like FLOWERS. It's packed with good songs, both famous (Ruby Tuesday, Let's Spend the Night Together, Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby Standing in the Shadow?) and obscure (Out of Time, Backstreet Girl, Ride on Baby). It's a collection of castaways from other albums (UK AFTERMATH primarily) and current singles -- glued together this album gives you 40 minutes of excellent Stones music. But it remains a hodge-podge. A lot of these tunes already appear on other records (e.g. BETWEEN THE BUTTONS). So, this limits the value of this collection. Buyer beware...

For Stones Aficionados Only,

"Flowers" is another frustrating example of US record executives greed. Why release two Stones records when you can take 2 or 3 tracks off each, thrown in some singles or B-sides and release three Stones records? With this particular record (originally released in June 1967), you get the songs left off of "Aftermath" and "Between the Buttons" with the addition of some great singles.Unfortunately (and this is the most frustrating point), you also get three songs that weren't on any Stones record ever. This is the only place to get "Ride On Baby", "Sittin' on a Fence" and "My Girl" (tracks that the Stones said they rejected for not making the cut). The cover of the Temptations classic "My Girl" is pretty lackluster and forgettable while the other two cuts are a bit of folk and pop with harpsichord and marimbas thrown in. Pleasant but unremarkable. However, "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow" was a killer single (not on any LP) where the Stones went into sonic overdrive. That particular track was the one worthwhile reason for owning this album before but now that it's available on the "Singles Collection Boxed Set", this album is really only good for die-hard Stones fans for want to own everything.
