Very Comprehensive Resource, April 30 2012
This review is from: Fluid Catalytic Cracking Handbook: An Expert Guide to the Practical Operation, Design, and Optimization of FCC Units (Hardcover)
Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) is the most important conversion process used in the petroleum refineries. This reference book gives a very comprehensive and accessible overview of FCC and would be a very useful resource for all the professionals in that field. This is a very well put together book that covers all of the essential FCC topics. The chapters in this book include 'FCC Feed Characterization,' 'Catalyst and Feed Additives,' 'Chemistry of FCC Reactions,' 'Products and Economics,' 'Troubleshooting,' 'Emissions,' and many others. The chapters are organized thematically, and the book follows a coherent theme of exposition of various areas. Nonetheless, it is possible to use the chapters, or event eh subsections, out of sequence as the need arises for any given reference material. Each chapter contains numerous tables, graphs, diagrams, and other useful information that makes this book very informative. Where applicable worked-out examples are given and these help facilitate the learning process. This book can be used either as a textbook or a reference work.

Generally good info; could use better structure, April 24 2012
By Comdet - Published on Amazon.com

My main purpose for this book was to gain a better working knowledge of FCC catalysts. It accomplished that goal generally well, outlining basic foundational issues such as catalyst components, properties and manufacturing. While sometimes too brief (with the author himself noting that a full exploration of catalysts would fill another volume of the book) it was generally helpful for my work. I did find the writing somewhat stilted and difficult to follow. And no, I was not expecting a novel, but good technical writing has a distinct, clear flow, which this volume lacks. I also found it lacking with regard to topic/sub-topic organization, often necessitating flipping back and forth to determine where I was in the discussion structure. Another point that disappointed me was the sometimes lack of good-quality illustrations. Granted, most are fine, and a few were very well done. However, there were several stood out as amateurish, and didn't meet the standards one would expect in a volume such as this. Overall, for me this was a three-star book. Lots of good info, but lacking in structure and flow.

Excellent source for FCC information, May 16 2012

This book is an excellent source for FCC information. I have a much better understanding of the basics (such as catalysts, binders fillers, etc), but more importantly this book has really helped me sort out the various metallurgy concerns that I have previously found to be somewhat complex. The chemistry section is particularly useful in this respect but I found the book to be helpful in all areas of the process. If you are an engineer in the petroleum business you will likely find this book to be indispensable.
