The album starts off with Space Intro, a two-minute run of smooth escalation. Amid a flow of simulated wind, Jachym Young uses the synthesizer portion of his B-3 organ to build up and up, eventually reaching the instantly-gratifying Steve Miller guitar hook that kicks off Fly Like An Eagle. Amid Steve's guitar and lyrics about the flow of time and the desire to break free and fly like the eponymous eagle, Jachym Young steals the show with his organ riffing, reaching his height in the stop-and-go third verse. He then closes it out with the return of the haunting flow of wind, the segue into the mezmerizing number Wild Mountain Honey.
Serenade, Dance Dance Dance, and Take The Money And Run come off as done more for laughs than anything, this trio piling on the cheese. Serenade's inane lyrics and Take The Money's humorous story of a latter-day Bonnie & Clyde feature engagingly deranged guitar by Miller.
Sandwiched within are the solid Mercury Blues and the one-two punch of Rock'n Me. Another instantly gripping drum-guitar hook kicks off Rock'n Me and reappears amid the smooth flow held together by Miller's engaging story of a man seeking a job anywhere to support his girl.
His cover of You Send Me is a rarity - a cover that surpasses the original.
The Window closes out the album with the return of Jachym Young's B-3, but this time the keyword is subtlety; there is none of the bombast of Fly Like An Eagle, and is a fine way of wrapping up this great long player.
