I first want to say that I am neither a Clay fan nor a Ruben fan. I personally couldn't care less for either of them.
After listening to these songs, I'm clueless as to why people even waste their time debating over these "artists". NEITHER CLAY NOR RUBEN ARE ARTISTS!!! THEY ARE MERELY SINGERS!! In other words, a small, techically oriented, musical dork (the real artist) who lacks the drop dead physical features and charm of our American Idol sits in a studio devising his next, mediocre hit for Ruben to sing.
Fans will listen to the songs for a month, if the songs are at the higher end of the mediocrity spectrum, maybe a year. After this period, the songs will never be remembered and it will be as if the songs were never created in the first place. AND WHY!!?!? BECAUSE THE SONGS ARE MEDIOCRE AT BEST!!
Why not make American Idol about who can create the best, most original, composition, not who has the best "voice", God knows what that means anyway (There are many different voices that sound good in different contexts, "best" is only a matter of opinion). Thousands upon thousands of people sing and thousands more are trained to sing every day, however, the ability to create timeless music is possessed by much fewer. Discovering and Idolizing those, I believe, would be a much more worthwhile endeavor.
Unlike those that listen to musical acts like Mr. Studdard and Mr. Aiken, I've actually had the pleasure of listening to music that is stirring and memorable, music that has much more depth and effectively employs a plethora of timbres in addition to or in place of the human voice. Sadly, this music will not be fed to you via the Radio, you will not find it on TRL either, you will actually have to seek it out.
