Great, comprehensive guide book May 19 2010
By J. Carrano - Published on
I bought this book, along with two other (both highly rated Amalfi coast guide books sold here), to come along with me on a Ischia/Capri/Sorrento trip. I brought all three books with me, but shouldn't have bothered. This book covered everything. Not only was it full of information that I found more than useful, but it also had recommended walking trips on all three destinations and sections devoted to highlights to do in each area. I also enjoyed that the book was in full-color and very much up to date.

Needless to say, this book was with me throughout the trip. The other two didn't leave the suitcase very much- though they were nice for some cross referencing along the way.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, was that as with any guide book of an area (as opposed to one destination), sometimes I was also left looking for just a little bit more detailed information.

I used this book in both planning our trip before hand and also took it with me to italy. It was very helpful and we changed some of plans on the road to make the most of our trip and this book was a good resource on the fly. I'd recommend it for any travelers.

I always buy these giant travel books as part of my excitement about an upcoming trip and find myself disappointed. But once I get to my destination, I'm too busy enjoying the trip to want to sit and read an encyclopedia. Places like Europe are best explored on foot, with no particular daily itinerary, a good map, and possibly a "top 10" list of must-see tourist spots (either from a friend or a much smaller book than Fodors). While the historical overview in this book is helpful as background, it's not worth lugging it in your suitcase across the Atlantic. It covers so many areas that the restaurants and hotels listed are difficult to find - you're better off choosing a hotel online and asking your concierge for restaurants once you get there (or discover one yourself!).

Despite my mediocre review, I do, however, highly recommend the Amalfi Coast. Incredibly stunning, laid back, very nice people. Two weeks wasn't enough.

Fodors is always a good bet, I have used these guides in the past and it has covered everything you want to see and do, and the tips have been right on

The layout is good, even though it is a few years old --hey the area has been there over a thousands years, not much has changed.
