I am truly glad I read this book- there was more to it that just a romance story (what the other reviewers have said is true- there is love, trust, respect, and loyalty). 4 boys that are living on the street come across a basket carrying a 4 month old little girl. Something inside of them helps them to decide that they want more out of life and that this little girl needs them and desires a chance to live. They come together to form a family and show devotion and love towards one another. After several years the English family has given up looking for their little girl that was kidnapped from them. But their attorney is devoted to them and continues the search- by continuing to check out claims that come across his desk. For this reason he decides to check a claim that leads him across the ocean to Montana- unknowning to him that he is about to lose his heart.
To the reader that was not able to finish- you missed out. There is love, humor, and suspence. You find yourself spending the night in a cave during a rainstorm, traveling across the ocean to meet a family that's about to meet their baby girl that they don't know exist, in a court room during a murder trail with the hanging judge presiding. There's not a dull moment. There were only two things that I would have liked to known the answer about- why did the person take the baby in the first place and what was Harrison's and Mr. Elliott's reaction when they found out Mary Rose was expecting a baby? I know they would have been joyful but I would like to have read about it.

"Blood is thicker than water"... but it isn't the case in this endearing book. For the Roses surely proved that a family can be strongly bonded through the years of love and taking care of each other. Family can be create not only formed by blood. Aside from the family values, the romantic story of Rose & Harrison added spice to the whole book. Mary Rose's discovery of her real father and their initial meeting was a tear jerker. I was once again in tears when I read the part of Mary Rose adjusting to her new family. J.G. described each scenes and emotions so perfectly that I feel like I am part of the book itself. I have many favorite scenes in this book but I have to hold back telling it, otherwise, I will give it away and ruined it for those who haven't read the book just yet.
I have read more than 10 of J.G.'s books and this is definitely one of my favorite. I am now in the third novel of the Clayborne Brides, which is part of this series. So far, I am not disappointed... here is how the series follows: For the Roses -----then--------> Clayborne Brides: 1st novel: One Pink Rose 2nd novel: One While Rose 3rd novel: One Red Rose ------last----------> Come the Spring
Hope that helps, Enjoy!

I was becoming disappointed in Garwood's books because of the "Me, puissant hero. You, ineffective heroine." style she was adopting. With this book, she has achieved a great triumph: she penned a believable, romantic and above all, humorous tale.
Too many novels have trite dialogue or exaggerated sex scenes and Garwood manages to steer clear of both. "For the Roses" entertained me so much that I had to put it down more than once so that I could stop laughing at the antics of the characters. I especially loved her heroine, Mary Rose Clayborne, because the young woman was intelligent, sassy and sweet. She also has a strong streak of common sense not often found in the gloriously beautiful and reckless heroines that populate lesser author's works. Mary Rose is definitely NOT monotonous or vain.
I like the structure of the novel, with its chapters interspersed with letters written by the Clayborne family to their matriarch and Mary Rose's namesake, Mama Rose. The characters come alive through the letters and we gain an insight into their personalities that we would not normally have.
Bravo, Ms. Garwood! This is the most excellently written novel of yours I have ever read.

This story and the entire series was beautiful. It illustrates what family is all about. Family is not just about blood its about LOVE,TRUST,RESPECT & LOYALTY. If this was required reading in high school maybe we wouldn't be a nation full of Jerry Springer guest. The selflessness of the young men in this story is inspiring. These young men show that even if life has been tough on you there is hope. This book and the entire Claybourne series really touched me. Julie Garwood is a sure thing!! I love all of her stories. ****WARNING JULIE GARWOOD FANS**** the movie ROSEHILL that is suppose to be based on this wonderful book in my opinion was awful!! They made Mary Rose out to be very selfish and mean. They KILLED OFF COLE!!! They never showed the family bonds that were created and were the main part of this lovely story. In essence everybody grew apart in the movie. They even leave you feeling that Adam will die of consumption eventually.. It was sad and depressing and I feel it didn't capture the magic of this book!!!

This was one of the best Julie Garwood books I have EVER read! I kept putting off reading For the Roses because personally I am a fan of her highlander ones...but this book was absolutely amazing. Who thinks about what would happen when 4 young boys all under the age of 14 raise a little girl..and themselves, all alone with only the help of Mama Rose, a slave who writes letters from the South during and after the Civil War? The love story was sweet and well paced and you found yourself falling in love with the Claybourne brothers...I was so relieved to find they all had their own books too! Trust me, all fans of do not want to miss this one. Its much more than just a romance and gives you nonstop laughs and its the most heartwarming book I have ever read. You won't be disappointed! (( It was also made into a Hallmark film, 'Rosehill' , but read the book instead...much much better..of course! :D ))
