Book Description

May 16 2011

In this mouth-watering collection of inspired and delicious dishes, renowned chef Denis Cotter takes vegetarian cooking to a new level.

‘No other book on vegetables in my library is so beautifully written or so thought-provoking. The recipes are intriguing and original but even if you never cook a single thing out of this book (which would be a crying shame), its worth buying for Denis’s beautiful prose – you’ll never think of vegetables in the same way again.’ Darina Allen in the Irish Examiner on Wild Garlic

These recipes are designed to complement busy modern-day life and include ideas for mid-week bowl dishes and simple snacks as well as summer barbecue recipes and mouth-watering salads and risottos.

Denis is famous for his inventive approach and this collection will inspire cooks everywhere, no matter what your taste or skill level. For the Love of Food is an essential cookbook for vegetarians but will also appeal to non-vegetarians who enjoy flavour-packed food and new combinations. Review

‘For the Love of Food, is full of colour, flavour and nutritional goodness, making his recipes ideal for committed vegetarians celebrating National Vegetarian Week and for those simply wanting ideas for Meat Free Mondays…His approach is a year-round celebration of vibrant, seasonal and fresh produce, based on the philosophy that our meals should not only be healthy and delicious, but cooked with love and appreciation.’ – Top Sante

“The latest book from the owner of Café Paradiso in Cork has lots of inventive recipes that will also appeal to the non-vegetarians who want to try some new combinations of flavours.” The Independent (One of the Top 50 Cook Books)

Reviews for Wild Garlic;

‘Not only the most gorgeous book title of the year, but also the most stylishly produced volume, and it’s a cracking read too.’ The Irish Times

‘A cookbook to lust after.’ Image Magazine

‘Vegetarian cookery with delicious style.’ BBC Good Food Magazine, January 08

‘Whether you get a veg box every week or shop at your local supermarket, you can't fail to have noticed that the variety of veg on offer has increased markedly over the last couple of years. This is exactly the kind of book you need to make the most of them. Denis Cotter, owner of Café Paradiso in Cork, Eire, has a way with veg, and his passion for them really comes through. Celeriac fritters with caper and rosemary aioli were earthy and sweet and the aubergine and cime di rape (turnip tops) with chillies, feta, citrus and pomegranate is packed with flavour, with none of the gloom associated with salad in winter. We guarantee you won't even notice the lack of meat.’ Book of the Month, Olive Magazine

About the Author

Denis Cotter was born and raised in Macroom, Co. Cork. In 1993 he established the now world-renowned Café Paradiso. This is Denis’ fifth cookery book

5.0 out of 5 stars The best vegetarian cookbook ever April 29 2013
By Anne - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I have been a vegetarian my entire life and a self-proclaimed foodie for the past several years. I love cooking and I love eating. I read several food blogs and own several cookbooks by top vegetarian chefs. It takes a lot to wow me and most classy restaurants fall flat when it comes to vegetarian food. Another plate of pasta primavera, or more roasted vegetables? yawn.

Not so with this cookbook! "For the Love of Food" wows with every single recipe! Thus far, having owned this cookbook for two weeks, I have made the "Roast pears with ginger steamed pudding and mascarpone ice cream", "Corn pancakes of courgettes, pine nuts & roasted onion with warm sungold tomato and caper salsa", and "Chard dolmas of quinoa, carrot & currants with saffron cashew butter sauce". They have all been amazing! The flavors are complex. Most of the flavor combinations I would have never come up with myself. This is a cookbook of creative, classy vegetarian food meant to impress and be shared with friends, meat eaters and vegetarians alike. There is a combination of recipes that are easier weeknight dinners, but also those that could serve as dinners for holidays, or other special events. Tomorrow night, I plan to try the "Chestnut and sheep's cheese ravioli with kale in pumpkin broth". Super-excited.

My dear husband is of Irish ancestry and has always wanted to visit Ireland with me. I have always been somewhat skeptical, as I assumed there wouldn't be much for me to eat there beyond potatoes. Apparently, this is an untrue stereotype, as Cafe Paradiso, a vegetarian restaurant run by this cookbook author operates in County Cork Ireland. So, it might just be worht it to go to Ireland now, just so I can eat at this author's restaurant :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Masterful Book From Denis Cotter April 13 2012
By Edward Lalor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a cookbook for any cook who considers those foods that are not meat, important enough to merit the kind of attention in their preparation, that makes them truly memorable. We find inventive combinations in these recipes that result in flavors, textures and overall new tastes that are superb examples of what a culinary master can inspire in all of us who cook.
Denis Cotter takes us into a food memoir that explores nine areas: Breakfast, Salad, Risotto, Soup, Mash, All wrapped up, Bowls, Oven and Sweetness. Each section promises a new take on the topic. There's not a lettuce wedge in the salad section or a plain risotto with parmesan in the risotto section. Instead, there are salads like Fingerling potato watercress and walnut salad, and risottos like Wild garlic and roast cherry tomato risotto with lemon braised artichokes.

The other sections further the dramatic imaginings of the author as they became real in his kitchen, and he shares them with the reader. Cotter is a great storyteller and both the major sections and the individual recipes are embellished with his spirited opinions, advice to the cook and his Irish flavored wit. The fine photography is an added treat.
