Book Description

Feb 23 2009 Harper Perennial Forbidden Classics

‘The Way of a Man with a Maid’ is a foray into pleasure, pain, lesbianism and etiquette – told from the viewpoint of a quintessential Edwardian gent. Having first appeared in Parisian journals around the turn of the century, it is widely acknowledged to be a defining example of the erotic genre, and reveals the dark underbelly of human sexuality.

Do the best things come to the woman who waits?

Jack has built a special place in a padded room of an old lunatic asylum named 'The Snuggery'. Filled with ropes, cushions, straps and feathers, he chooses Alice to complete the decoration. Imprisoned against her will, she is teased into submission. And in moments of passion, when Jack names her his 'wife', Alice finally surrenders her maidenhead, submitting to the power of his unbridled lust.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh, those Victorians... Nov 27 2006
By Reginleif II - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Ignore the offended fussings of the previous reviewer. Yes, this novel eroticizes rape. But keep the context in mind: Victorian England, where/when "proper ladies" would never admit to liking sex, let alone seek it out. If you're looking for something to affirm your womynhood, there are plenty of other erotic reads out there nowadays.

Subtle, the book is not. Then again, some of us like the heavy-breathing, over-the-top, exclamation-mark-laden descriptions that characterize much Victorian erotica. And some of us don't particularly care that much if the plot isn't comparable to that of something on the New York Times best-seller list. Granted, I'd have liked to see the other female characters developed as much as Alice's is. Just take the book as a sequence of vignettes, not a fully integrated novel.

I do have two issues with this book. One is that the author seems to be a little unfamiliar with the workings of female anatomy (which might have been more common then among men than it is today): the women do not seem to lubricate until orgasm, when they "gush" in a manner similar to ejaculation. The other is that the final vignette, involving a mother and daughter who are forced into sexual acts with one another, is way beyond my limits and probably many other people's limits as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Willing to be had Jan 8 2001

Beware girls, when this guy is around. Refuse his love and see what he will do. He commits an unnnatural act by force and she enjoys it so much, that she asks for it and not the other, second time around. Throughly enjoyed this book, as the heroine becomes so depraved that she helps her ravisher to seduce other acquaitances whom she too enjoys. Only downer was that no other men occur.

5.0 out of 5 stars BSDM-oriented Erotica Sep 19 2009
By Nicole M. Rios - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Bondage and submission. Male dominance. Victorian erotica. These are some of the key themes I would choose for this book. Of course the book is taboo. Anyone buying EROTICA should realize that. The book deals with a man who outfits his home with a sort of dungeon in which he lures women, straps them down, and has sex with them. After wards, several of the women come back to him willingly and even help him with his next "victim". If this sort of work offends you, then I suggest you look for something else. For the sort of book this was supposed to be, it was amazing.
