Book Description

April 24 2007

There's a first for everything.

When you build up something in your mind -- really imagine it, wish for it -- sometimes, when it actually happens, it doesn't live up to your expectations.

True love is nothing like that.

Especially not for Katherine and Michael, who can't get enough of each other. Their relationship is unique: sincere, intense, and fun all at the same time. Although they haven't been together all that long, they know it's serious. A whole world opens up as young passion and sexuality bloom.

But it's senior year of high school, and there are big changes ahead. Michael and Katherine are destined for another big "first": a decision. Is this the love of a lifetime, or the very beginning of a lifetime of love?

"Going all the way" is still a taboo subject in young adult literature. Judy Blume was the first author to write candidly about a sexually active teen, and she's been defending teenagers' rights to read about such subjects ever since. Here, Blume tells a convincing tale of first love--a love that seems strong and true enough to last forever. Katherine loves Michael so much, in fact, that she's willing to lose her virginity to him, and, as the months go by, it gets harder and harder for her to imagine living without him. However, something happens when they are separated for the summer: Katherine begins to have feelings for another guy. What does this mean about her love for Michael? What does this mean about love in general? What does "forever" mean, anyway? As always, Blume writes as if she's never forgotten a moment of what it's like to be a teenager. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars To each their own. Sep 18 2012
Format:Paperback
Bible-Lovers and over-protective parents - be ware! This is not the book for your teenager! I read this book when I was in High School. My mother gave it to me when I was in a serious relationship with my high school sweetheart - also named Michael! This book did not determine whether or not I was going to have sex - because in the end, it's going to happen if your child chooses it to. No matter how much to tell them or order them not to. Tell them your opinions, but give them all the facts (ie. Safe practice)!

Some say that this book is written as if it was actually done by a teenage girl - and so it should! The audience of this book is just that! Teenage girls. Even though it was written in 1975, I related to it as a young woman of the 21st century. In my opinion it is timeless. I am married now and no it is not to my high school sweetheart - but I don't regret a minute of that relationship and look back at it fondly. I am still friends with him today. If this book teaches girls anything - it's that Love is a real thing and that they should respect themselves and wait for their first time to really mean something - whether it's at 17 years old -- or with the man you marry, and not just because they are pressured into it.

This book might not depict the real life of some readers experiences - but for me, it describes my first time almost bang on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Forever- a novel about love July 14 2004
By Kristen
Format:Mass Market Paperback
From reading reviews you may get many different opinions on
what this novel is about. Some say the message is that highschool love never lasts; try telling that to the married couples I know who dated in high school. The book isn't about that it is about how people, young people especially, will not usualy know if a relationship will last forever until a great deal of time passes. Relationships are hard work and even if it does last forever it won't be easy. Another message is that love may break your heart but it isn't the end of the world.
This book is great for young people read about love and sex.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Example of Adolescent Naivete July 13 2002
By Pamela
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Judy Blume comes up with the most interesting ideas, though her usually poor writing ability fails to convey them to their uttmost potential. Luckily, this book so urgently describes teen "first love" that her writing style need not be considered. Although many have complained that the sex scenes are far too graphic, I disagree; they do not totally convey the physical realities of sexual encounters. Judy Blume effectively sanitized the sex act for her chosen parent/teen audience of readers. What the book does right is to demonstrate the shallow, extremely physical nature of a teenage relationship, and the characters' inexperienced - but changing - views on the subject of love.
