5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and satisfying, Feb 8 2008

Belinda Scott left her comfortable life behind when her father loas his business and sold his family into indentured servitude. With both parents dead, she is trying to make her way in a household in Quebec, along with her little sister. Times are tough.

An evil man makes her an offer she can't refuse, to be installed in a house in New York to spy on an American patriot. And so poor Belinda gets caught up in revolutionary war politics.

Gabriel Elliot has his own demons to fight. Years ago a tragedy took his family from him. Now he is attracted to his new housemaid, but he doesn't trust her. She is, after all, a spy. He tries to resist her charms, but can't seem to.

This book has some very sweet scenes, and a few pages that will bring tears to your eyes, but it overall it is a very good read.

2.0 out of 5 stars My sympathies were with the British:, Sep 20 2011

I had the opposite experience of the 5-star reviewer. I couldn't find anything to like about this novel, and I sure did try. I was pleased to find a romance which was set during the American Revolution, but this exciting time wasn't used to good effect. There seemed to be a 21st-century flavor rising to the top of this 17th-century story.

Belinda is possibly the worst, most clumsy spy ever put on earth. The hero thinks this about her, and suspects her, from the instant she comes to his house to work, so there's *zero* suspense in the brief time she actually spies on his activities.

Another big problem was that Belinda was an uninspiring heroine. She seems to be there only for things to happen to; she's not very resourceful or intelligent. The hero Gabriel wasn't much better - he lacks charm and seductiveness. The love scenes were only "meh". The evil villian who coerced Belinda into being a spy gets a comeuppance. All in all, it was a predictable, pallid historical romance.
