Product Description

Amazon.ca Canadian Essential

This Juno-award-winning sophomore effort seemed to legitimize Canada's much-discussed and highly touted "post-rock" scene. Drawing on a revolving cast of 11 members, Broken Social Scene's guitar driven, orchestral and amazingly diverse rock entranced hipsters and rock fans alike with its sweeping themes and impressive sonic force. -- S. Duda

Album Description

Broken Social Scene materialized in 1999 when K.C. Accidental's Kevin Drew & Brendan Canning, formerly of By Divine Right, bonded their friendship into a band. During the next few years, Broken Social Scene created an atmospheric rock sound. Feel Good Lost marked their debut album in 2001 & introduced a revolving cast of Canadian indie musicians. Drew's fellow mate from Do Make Say Think was added to the band, as well as Evan Cranley (Stars), James Shaw, & Emily Haines (Metric). You Forgot It in People showcased Broken Social Scene's expansive musical design in October 2002. Digipak. Copy Controlled. Arts & Crafts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Go Wrong, Sep 24 2005

This album just makes you mellow and want to cruise at the same time. My all-time favourite for on the road, or out by foot. Foundation of a great music collection & will introduce you to other artists you will love. Ranks in my all-around top 5, if not number 1. Hooray for BSS.

4.0 out of 5 stars If it ain't Broken..., Mar 6 2004

This review is from: You Forgot It in People (Audio CD)
There's a fresh, original sound to Broken Social Scene's indie hit "You Forgot It In People." Rock, pop and a dash of blues are expertly woven together into an atmospheric whole -- some of it is catchy, some is mellow, some is rock-y and all of it is worth listening to.

A shimmering intro brings us into the interesting "Capture the Flag." Instantly afterward, Broken Social Scene captures attention with bouncy, percussion/guitar rock (the rousing, catchy "KC Accidental" and "Cause=Time"), alluring pop (whimsical "Pacific Theme"), jazz-tinged rock (the sax'n'drums rock "Almost Crimes (Radio Kills Remix)" and banjo-y, meditative "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl"). The album rounds off on a more majestic note with the slower "Lover's Spit" and violin-pop "Pitter Patter Goes My Heart."

Broken Social Scene is a crazy quilt of people from other indie rock bands, come together apparently just to make music. And that's something they do quite well. Simple, thought-provoking lyrics ("we all want to f*** the cause") and velvety vocals are the icing on the cake -- the cake itself is the expansive, delicate, sometimes bombastic music with some wonderful pop hooks.

There's plenty of musical diversity in here. Sure, the core of it is electric guitar and drums. But there's also violin (the solo at the end is pure beauty), saxophone, and flute. It does stumble in one major way: Some songs, such as "Capture the Flag" and "Late Nineties Bedroom Rock for the Missionaries" have interesting melodies, but they don't seem to go anywhere. In places, "You Forgot..." seems to get a little tangled in its own artistry.

Indie rock has the reputation of being independent artistically too. Broken Social Scene's "You Forgot It In People" lives up to that reputation with eclectic, inventive, and extremely enjoyable music. It combines the best of alternative, pop and rock. A treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's almost a crime..., July 10 2004

This review is from: You Forgot It in People (Audio CD)
that anyone would rate this below a 5!!!! I understand some people's frustration at more mellow tracks like "Looks Just Like The Sun" but sheesh...the stronger tracks are REALLY strong. and the "okay" ones are pretty good, infinitely better than other groups' throwaway tracks. (In my opinion, the "bad" songs on here are much better than the "bad" songs on Hail To The Thief, and I am a much bigger Radiohead fan than a BSS one...)

Listen to this album with an open mind.
