After a remarkable 15 years in, a band should by this time be content to slow down and rest on their laurels. Instead, ''Fortune's Favour'' sees Great Big Sea boldly embracing new sounds and new ideas, fearlessly pushing the boundaries of their own art and music. In their lifelong quest to marry the traditional music of Newfoundland with their own pop explorations, Fortune's Favour is a new benchmark.

14 new tracks plus a bonus DVD of the group in the recording studio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It!!!, Jun 26 2008
By Pamela R. Frank "Naturopathic Doctor" (Toronto ON Canada) - See all my reviews

I pre-ordered this CD as soon as I knew it was coming out and love it! It's definitely one of the best by Great Big Sea. It's a great mix of music, but I've always especially enjoyed Great Big Sea's own brand of pop. The first two tracks give me chills every time I listen to them that's how good they are. These guys never stop evolving and to my mind just keep getting better and better. I can't wait to see them perform this album live. There's not a bad song on the CD and if you want everything from soul touching to uplifting, get Fortune's Favour!

4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic new album, Jun 24 2008
By L. Maitland - See all my reviews

I have to admit, I only found out a week ago that this CD was being released, but darned if I didn't run out and buy it the moment I got the chance. After listening to it, I really am glad my friend told me about its release.
As usual, GBS has continued to alter their traditional sound, making some of the tracks (e.g. Love Me Tonight and Oh Yeah) mcuh less folk-y than I'm used to, but they all have appeal and it keeps the album from becoming boring and repetitive. As usual, some tracks are more forgettable than others, but some stand out as being particularly wonderful. Dance Dance is a catchy tune you'll be humming for weeks, and England is truly moving and, in my opinion, by far the best song on the album, and possibly the best song on any of their albums. If an album could be carried entirely on the weight of one song, I would give it 5 stars, but it just didn't quite make it.
Still worth purchasing and listening to over and over again.
And by the way, the liner notes are most entertaining.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, April 14 2009
Having fallen in love with the driving beat, celtic rhythms, and general uplifting nature of GBS's previous works, this album is not what I expected. I wasn't sure who I was listening to. Can this be GBS? Have they gotten old and slow while I wasn't looking? Are they depressed? The music is slow and drags.

There is a large focus on historic ballads which are very slow. That is fine but call the album "Historic Ballads" then. The remaining songs are disappointing lacking anything that makes you want to kick up your heels. If you feel the need to cry into a pint of Guiness while lamenting the injustices of life, this is the album for you.

Hopefully, GBS is just in their experimental phase. Given a choice, I would return this album. Greatly disappointed.
