Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Although notoriously difficult to license, the Rolling Stones release what may be considered their definitive "best of" collection, 40 Licks. Disc one focuses (with the exception of Sticky Fingers' "Wild Horses") on the golden period, from their formation in 1962 to 1970. Although not in chronological order, it includes every phase of the decade--the early covers like "Not Fade Away"; the all-conquering classics like "Satisfaction" and "Get off My Cloud"; the often overlooked psychedelic Satanic Majesties period represented here by "She's a Rainbow"; and when they really found their own sound, the Let it Bleed era with the likes of "Gimme Shelter" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash". If disc one covers the first eight years, then disc two covers the next 32--the stadium years. With an audience on a ludicrously grand scale, the Stones fell into a pattern of anthemic blues-rock, such as "Tumbling Dice", "Brown Sugar" and "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll". Next there were the odd experiments to keep up with the youngsters, such as the disco-influenced "Miss You", which, like Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy", was inspired, but thankfully a one off. And so onto the bleak period, after the stadium filler "Start Me Up", they fell on a rough patch that would last pretty much until Voodoo Lounge in the 1990s, a fantastic return to form, with several more songs that could have been worthy for this "best of" but were sadly not chosen in favour of "Love is Strong" and "You Got Me Rocking". Including four new songs produced by the same guy who did their last two albums, this really is the full story-so-far covering 40 years of the world's most famous rock & roll band. --David Trueman

Chronique amazon.fr

Et ce en une formule définitive : It's only rock'n'roll (but I [we] like it).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent jump-start to your Stones collection, Jun 6 2004
By
Max Futterman (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
If you are a fan of the Rolling Stones but have very few if any of their albums, than this is the CD to buy. It's an excellent way to start off your collection with a bunch of rock 'n roll gems. But, if you're a die-hard fan with a bunch of their albums already in your possesion, don't buy this. Every song on this CD except four new ones can be found on various other Rolling Stones CDs. Those four are (put mildly) very fourth-rate songs.

With that said, you get two CDs with this collection, Disc One being the sixties and one seventies song (Wild Horses), and Disc Two being post sixties. Disc One is worth the price you pay for the entire collection. On it are twenty great songs including (but not limited to) Street Fighting Man, The Last Time, Honkey Tonk Woman, Jumpin' Jack Flash (my favorite), Sympathy for the Devil (my other favorite), and Mother's Little Helper. Disc Two has a few gems (Angie, Miss You, Start Me Up), and a couple of fourth rate songs (Undercover of the Night, Anybody Seen My Baby, Losing My Touch to name a few). Don't get me wrong, Disc Two isn't a terrible CD, but we're kinda spoiled with Disc One. If I was making the Album, I'd replace the four new songs with Tell Me, As Tears Go By, She's So Cold, Heart of Stone.

4.0 out of 5 stars 40 years 40 songs 1 band, Oct 1 2002

How do you pick forty songs from a catalogue that spans forty years? If you're the Rolling Stones you give us "Forty Licks" - 36 tried and true hits and four new additions to the cannon. It's easy to quibble with the song selection - why have "You Got Me Rocking" or "Anybody Seen My Baby" when you could have "One Hit to the Body," "Hand of Fate," "2000 Light Years From Home," "Lady Jane,""She's So Cold," "Star Star," "Heartbreaker" or "Waiting on a Friend" to name a few. Personally I wish they had given us forty of their best and then a bonus cd with the four new tunes. That said, the music has a good flow, the new song are decent to steller - "Losing My Touch" is as bittersweet and boozy as anything Keith Richards has ever sang, and damn, this is still the greatest rock and roll band in the world, so enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Need 65 Licks +, July 19 2004

(REAL NAME)
40 Licks was released worldwide on October 1, 2002. Obviously, there are 40 tracks including 4 new ones (the single Don't Stop, Stealing My Heart, Keys To Your Love, and Keith's Losing My Touch). This one is the 22nd compilation album the Stones have released. It is the 19th compilation in the UK and the 9th in the US. There are lots of opinions about what should and should have been included/left off (there are *25* single releases that were not included). Remember, if anyone ever releases the entire Stones catalog as a box set it will have to be packaged in a trunk that comes with a dolly to get it out of the store. Since everybody knows the songs anyway, how about if I list what is on it from when for you?

These songs are the most popular from the Rolling Stones Records releases. Here are the original US and UK release dates of each song (US release and re-release dates were often different during this period):

3-6-64 Not Fade Away
