5.0 out of 5 stars This book IS in print!, May 28 2002
By Pete Peterson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Foundations of Solid Mechanics (Hardcover)
Foundations of Solid Mechanics is an excellent text on solid mechanics. Its content makes up the first 15 chapters of Classical and Computational Solid Mechanics, by Fung and Tong (published 2001). In addition to all of the content from Foundations of Solid Mechanics, Classical and Computational Solid Mechanics contains 6 chapters on computational methods, emphasizing FEM. The book is very thorough and a real deal at ...for almost 1000 pages.

From the preface: "The classical part is mainly a re-issue of Fung's Foundations of Solid Mechanics, with a major addition to the modern theories of plasticity, and a major revision of the theory of large elastic deformation with finite strains."

I (and at least two dozen people I know) would love to have this book on our shelves. Right now we are reduced to borrowing copies from older and wiser friends and colleagues. Quite simply, in my opinion one of the best solid mechanics texts ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pea-brained and Penurious Publishers, July 14 1999
By Hairy Growler "Hairy Growler" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Foundations of Solid Mechanics (Hardcover)
Fung's "Foundations of Solid Mechanics" has not been superseded, nor is it outdated. It is the best introductory solid mechanics book I know, and it is not available. What gives?

There once was a time when publishers recognized and appreciated excellence and felt a certain obligation to publish important, but less profitable, books. Some publishers actually took pleasure in making available great books to those now underappreciated readers who revel in them. Many of today's publishers either don't recognize important books, or they see no reason (financially speaking) to publish for a limited audience of discriminating readers. These publisher's brains must be the size of peas, or a dollar signs $.
