A motiveless murder...every policeman's committed in a stretch of forest between two peaceful villages. Supt. Lambert and his CID team can find few connections between the people who were around at the time of his death and a victim who seems to have no enemies. Before long, it seems that they have a serial killer on their hands, selecting victims at random. The rural community closes in upon itself, preserving it's secrets from outsiders.

I'm new to James Michael Gregson and was keen to try out The Fox in the Forest but uncertain what to expect. As I delved deep into the book and the story, I must confess that a lot of surprises and thrills were in store for me, particularly the fine writing style which was amply on display throughout the book. The creativity of the author with the added bonus of a well-conceived story combines to make The Fox in the Forest an enjoyable read.

The characters are finely developed and fitted into the story without ever seeming out of place. JM Gregson has a way with words which fascinates and teases the readers. While The Fox in the Forest is not one of those "unputdownable"books, it is still one of those which many readers will enjoy.

Highly literate work April 11 2015

I love mysteries BUT I also really love eloquently written mysteries, a very rare thing indeed. This novel, by someone who apparently was professor before he became a full time writer, fits the bill. No, this is not a thriller, or a shoot-em-up bang-up. But it's lyrical and so descriptive you can feel the frigid English winter going right through.

Explosive and tense mystery thriller Jan. 14 2015

With an explosive start, this is an edge-of-your-seat mystery with the twists and turns that I’ve come to expect from JM Gregson. He doesn’t let you down in this one. The tension runs high the whole way through and I was a nervous wreck by the time I finished it – a really excellent crime thriller!
Detective duo deluxe Oct. 3 2015

This was the fifth in the series of the Lambert and Hook detective investigation duo, and unfortunately the first one I've read. I will make sure that I read the others!
A town vicar is found dead, his wife is the main suspect, as she was missing before, with her lover. Or is it the obvious bad guy.
This book and the relationship reminded me a lot of the detective Barnaby duo in Midsomer murders, and I just loved the show!!
More murders are committed and the detectives must solve the mysteries.
It was such an entertaining read, and I really enjoyed it.
The book was well written and ending nicely wrapped up.

Cleverly written. Didn't know the culprit until close to the end of the book.
