Excellent for grinding saffron threads and dry herbs/spices, easy to clean, Oct 25 2011

The well of the mortar and the rounded tip of the pestle have a rough, nonporous surface. This, together with the size of the well, makes this mortar and pestle perfect for grinding saffron threads to a fine powder (that way you use half the amount the recipe calls for and get even more flavor and color than using whole threads).I have two other ones which are 7" and 2" in diameter, respectively, and yet I'm always reaching for this one because it really works great, particularly for dry herbs/spices.
For pesto I use my larger mortar. It is quite possible to make pesto in this one, though, but it takes longer and it doesn't hold as much.
This mortar is dishwasher safe, but it can be hand washed in seconds. Food stains come right off.

I love this little mortar & pestal. It's perfect for grinding upwhole cloves. Cloves in particular are tough to grind into a powder, & my old plastic one got torn up at the bottem from the process. This one delivers the right substance & surface to get the job done right. I'm crazy about it.

I was so pleased when I received this beautiful Mortar and Pestle. Solid marble, beautiful and very functional. I almost want to put it in my China closet, but instead I use it every day for crushing pills. I couldn't be more pleased with its usefulness
