5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Series May 5 2010
This wonderful series, that many of us thought had ended, has returned with three episodes that prove, once again, that this is an example of quality viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking Detective Show Feb. 14 2011
By R. Widdowson TOP 500 REVIEWER
If you are searching for a thinking-person's TV series then Foyle's War will yield many pleasant surprises. The British series, set during the Second World War, follows the murder investigations of Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle, played by Michael Kitchen (Out of Africa [Blu-ray]). Although each season corresponds to a year of WW II (season one with 1939, season two with 1940, and so on), we never see any frontline action. The entire show takes place on the English home front. But what a home front! Blackmail, smuggling, espionage, and of course murder and mayhem all make their appearance. And it's up to Foyle to solve the murders.

Most TV programs present the world in mind-numbingly superficial terms, but not Foyle's War. Not only is the main plot always well written, but each episode also contains secondary and tertiary plots that hold our attention thus adding depth and complexity to the overall story. As you would expect, the main characters are well-defined, but so are the secondary ones. This is how it should be in a good detective drama: when a new character emerges, he or she should be regarded as a potential suspect, so that the audience never quite knows who to suspect. Foyle's War always has plenty of characters with interesting personalities to grab our attention (and draw suspicion away from the real culprit). But, in order for this ploy to be successful the dialogue must be exceptional, the acting superb, and the drama must have enough twists and turns to keep us off kilter for the entire 90 minutes of each episode. Plus, the various plots must be artfully intertwined. These are no small requirements to pull off.

5.0 out of 5 stars back AND better June 12 2010
By Dave and Joe TOP 100 REVIEWER
We love the Foyle's War series. We both love historical fiction, especially that set around the two World Wars. Foyle's War manages to educate about history (they almost never err on historical detail - trust me, we've checked) and provide a wonderful mystery at the same time. We waited in eager anticipation for this set to hit Canadian shores and bought it on the day it was available. I was worried about putting it in the DVD because my anticipation was such that there was a huge chance of disappointment. Well, in fact, the series maintained it's crisp writing and astonishing character potraits. But, and this is big, the final episode may be the best of the entire series. And that's saying a lot. I envy you if you haven't yet seen it and are about to purchase it.

Michael Kitchen's, as Inspector Foyle, in WW2 England is quite believable. The hardships the English people suffered and the humanity shown (good and bad) were very well played.

5.0 out of 5 stars Foyle's War - Set 6 July 1 2010
This is possible the best of the series. All the characters have matured in their roles to the point where they are the people they portray. The series have been great from beginning to end and this is because of the great cast writing and directing. I will be watching these videos for many years to come. Will there be a new series with Foyle in America? It seems the door is open. A truly great performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great British series
I thoroughly enjoy this series. My only complaint would be that there are only 3 episodes in this set. They are each at least 90 min long, so it is still good value. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good but not as good as the first 5 seasons.
This has been one of our family's favourite TV series. That being said, this season was quite as good as the previous five.
