Product Description

From Amazon.com

Frankenstein, loved by many decades of readers and praised by such eminent literary critics as Harold Bloom, seems hardly to need a recommendation. If you haven't read it recently, though, you may not remember the sweeping force of the prose, the grotesque, surreal imagery, and the multilayered doppelgänger themes of Mary Shelley's masterpiece. As fantasy writer Jane Yolen writes of this (the reviewer's favorite) edition, "The strong black and whites of the main text [illustrations] are dark and brooding, with unremitting shadows and stark contrasts. But the central conversation with the monster--who owes nothing to the overused movie image … but is rather the novel's charnel-house composite--is where [Barry] Moser's illustrations show their greatest power ... The viewer can all but smell the powerful stench of the monster's breath as its words spill out across the page. Strong book-making for one of the world's strongest and most remarkable books." Includes an illuminating afterword by Joyce Carol Oates.

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-Full-color drawings, photographs, and reproductions with extended captions have been added to the unedited text of Shelley's novel, thus placing the work in the context of the era in which it was written. The artwork faithfully represents the text and makes this edition appealing to reluctant readers. Unfortunately, many of the captions provide tangential information that, although interesting, interrupts the flow of the story. However, readers will quickly learn that it is not necessary to read every caption and appreciate this volume for its many quality illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as expected, May 13 2004

I guess I based my presumption of this book on all the movies. Frankenstein is not the creature who I thought he was. I found myself feeling sorry for him. Wishing that someone would reach out to him. Mary Shelley left it to your imagination on really what he looked like. I enjoyed this portion to. The book was exquisitely written. I felt I was actually transported to this era. Enjoyed it very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read, Jul 8 2009

I picked up Frankenstein figuring it would be someone comparable to that of the horror movies, tv shows, or cartoons I grew up watching, but I was utterly wrong. It is much more enthralling. The characters and the idea of what is right and wrong, good and evil drew me in and engrossed me throughout. A minute physical description is given of Frankenstein's creation, which leaves your imagination free to run wild. Great read :).

5.0 out of 5 stars the first science fiction?, Feb 19 2009

One of the best novels ever in my opinion. Not because of the writing style, or because of some sort of realism in the plot. We cannot judge a book from this time period based on the standards of today. The strength of this novel comes from the issues of morality that it raises, and from the psychological issues the characters provoke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected Sympathy and Disgust
Frankenstein is a great novel. I went into it with all the flawed knowledge that television had told me of the tale. Of course, I was blown away with how the tale really went. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Glad it's over; glad to say I read it.
I found this book hard to finish, its' language akin to Shakespeare in difficulty. However, Shelley has to be credited for the way she wrote the book in male points-of-view; had... Read more
