Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Maxwell Kane, a lumbering eighth grader who describes himself as a "butthead goon," has lived with grandparents Grim and Gram ever since his father was imprisoned for murdering his mother. Mean-spirited schoolmates and special ed (for an undetermined learning disability) haven't improved his self-image, so he is totally unprepared for a friendship with Kevin, aka Freak, a veritable genius with a serious birth defect that's left him in braces and using crutches. Max is uplifted by Freak's imagination and booming confidence, while Freak gets a literal boost--hoisted onto Max's shoulders, he shares Max's mobility. Together they become Freak the Mighty, an invincible duo. Philbrick's first YA novel, already implausible, becomes choked with cliches and stereotypes as Max and Freak mix with B-movie lowlifes, a newly paroled Killer Kane kidnaps his son and Freak himself meets a cloyingly articulated fate. Contrived and unappetizing. Ages 10-14.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS EVER, Oct 4 2006
By
Paula Whalen - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Freak the Mighty (Paperback)
This book is sooo good. there is a never ending list about how fablous this book is. I had to read it over the summer for my summer reading list in school, when i first read the title i was like " OHH, GREAT I HAVE TO READ ANOTHER REALLY STUPID BOOK FOR SCHOOL WHICH TITLE DOESNT MAKE SENSE, WHAT KIND OF TITLE IS " FREAK THE MIGHTY " but then i relized who it was by and i was soo excited to read it. i had just finished " Fire Pony " by the same author and i loved that as well. so i knew that i would enjoy this one just as much. When i explained the book to my mom after reading it she thought the story line was too scary and horrible for 6th graders to read, but after she read it she understood the blance, and the symbols that the characters show. This book can make you cry, laugh, or even make your heart skip a beat because it is an aboulte page turner. i would recomend this book to anyone who loves a really good story that will make your day seem sooo much better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kinda Boring, Jan 17 2004
This review is from: Freak the Mighty (Paperback)
I had to read this book in seventh grade for Language Arts and everyone in my class absolutley hated it. Freak the Mighty was so boring and did not keep my attention I had never fallen asleep in class before until I was reading this book. The idea of an eighth grader who seems to have a learning disability becoming friends with a midget becomes entirely weird. I hated this book in every way possible I hope that you will take my advice and steer clear of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Alive, Jun 15 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Freak the Mighty (Paperback)
Freak the Mighty is an awsome book. It has a bunch of humorous and sad scenes. The part of it that I especially liked was when Max had the squirt gun full of soap, vinegar, and curry powder and he made Killer Kane think his eyes were burning up. Freak the Mighty has a really cool dictionary that Freak wrote. If I were to rank the book, I would give it four stars because it is very tradedous but adventourous. If you like action books, then this is the book for you. Freak the Mighty is one of the best books I have ever read, so I encourage you to read it.
