After 11 years in development hell and screenplay drafts by 13 different writers, the long-awaited smackdown of Freddy vs. Jason finally arrives. After making their respective debuts in Friday the 13th (1980) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger, replacing long-time Jason performer Kane Hodder) and razor-gloved Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) square off in a slasher-franchise combo-deal that only their most devoted fans will appreciate; turns out this is a lightweight match in which nobody wins. It's an average entry in the histories of these horror icons, comparable to half of their previous sequels, and Bride of Chucky director Ronny Yu satisfies purists with plenty of gushing blood and mayhem when Freddy recruits Jason to slice 'n' dice the ill-fated teens who've forgotten Freddy's once-formidable reign of terror. While it logically connects the gruesome legacies of Nightmare's Elm Street and Friday's Camp Crystal Lake, this horror hybrid is shockingly uninspired. It briefly peaks when Freddy gives the unconscious Jason a dream-world pummeling, but their ultimate showdown's a draw. In the immortal words of Peggy Lee, is that all there is? --Jeff Shannon

"Freddy Vs. Jason" is certainly an fun guilty pleasure, especially if you love the "Friday the 13th" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series. The highlight is getting Robert Englund as "Freddy Krueger" is always a plus. There is a new actor playing "Jason Voorhees" in this one, since New Line Cinema wanted an new actor to play "Jason". Since it was originally played by Kane Hodder four times! Perphas Hodder was the only one, who truly taken the "Jason" role seriously. But the new "Jason" plays him well and it is played by stunt-man Ken Kirzinger. But the tricky part of this movie is actually the script. Which the movie always has its highs and lows, nearly non-stop. Mostly is due to terrible dialogue at times and Director Ronny Yu unnecessary uses of slow motion in some of the better horror sequences. But the director certainly makes up for style in the story's weak areas. Since Freddy has to bring back to Jason to life, since no one remembers Freddy in Springwood. By bringing Jason back, Freddy thinks people will remember him somehow! It is odd storyline for sure! Doesn't make alot of sense but fans of the two franchises won't mind.

Blu-ray has an sharp anamorphic (2.35:1) Widescreen 1080P transfer and an strong Dolby 5.1 TruHD Sound. Blu-ray has all the special features from the 2-Disc DVD Set. If you want more trivia for this one, you can read Crystal Lake Memories and watch "His Name was Jason" and especially "Never Sleep Again" documentary. "Freddy Vs. Jason" is actually an fun movie to watch. I like it enough, despite some serious flaws and awful dialogue. The actors in the picture are better than expected. Monica Keena makes an great heroine and Jason Ritter, who truly looks like his late father John Ritter in a nice supporting role. There is another Blu-ray release from Alliance with an DTS 5.1 HD Sound, it is certainly stronger than the Dolby 5.1 TruHD Sound but it has no special features. Super 35. Grade:B+ for the movie. Picture Quality and Sound Quality:A-.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Hack and Slash fest in the ultimate showdown! Feb 18 2005
By Robert Badgley TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
I don't know why Ken Hodder wasn't in this picture(it is a shame) but Ken Hirzinger does a very credible job in portraying everyones' favourite camp hackmeister Jason Vorhees.
And of course there's no one out there that could ever play everyones' favourite slashman Freddie Kreuger but Robert Englund.Without overstating it he really "owns" the part.
This movie ably directed by chinese director Ronny Yu is a fine showcase for the title characters and they have plenty of on screen time to show us all that they haven't lost their touch one bit.Mr.Yu keeps the movie flowing along at a good pace and he enhances many a scene giving them a fuller and more interesting dynamic than might have been handled by other lesser directors.
The final climactic showdown does not disappoint one iota. It's a gorefest even I found myself wincing and turning away briefly from periodically.
I think everyone at New Line cinema should be proud of this film.Robert Shaye, the head honcho, has been particularly picky over the years regarding scripts for all the Freddie movies. He is one of the very few people in any studio who has actually welcomed input and discussion from the fans of his Nightmare franchise.....and that goes for the creator Wes Craven also.
Also all involved have gone to great pains to keep Freddies' character consistent from the first picture to the last. And they have continued this with their latest entry. The character of Jason has also, from what I can see, been treated in the same respectful manner which makes this picture even more of a delight to watch.
In conclusion this film is a very worthy successor to all previous Jason and Freddie movies from the past. And it will definitely not disappoint any fans casual or hard core at all.I can smell sequel...and can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars FREDDY VS. JASON VS. FANS Aug 12 2004
By jason
Format:DVD
BEING A HUGE FAN OF THE NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET SERIES, I COULDNT HELP BUT FEEL A LITTLE DISSAPOINTED WITH THE MUCH AWAITED FREDDYVS.JASON. I LOVED THE FIRST HALF OF THE MOVIE AND FOUND MYSELF SURPRISINGLY AND PLEASANTLY FEELING LIKE I WAS WATCHING ONE OF THE CLASSIC NIGHTMARE MOVIES. HOWEVER IT STARTED TO GO DOWN HILL WITH THE PARTICULARILLY BAD PERFORMANCES OF MONICA KEENA AND JASON RITTER. KATHERINE ISSABELLE AND DAVID KOPP WERE CLEARLY THE ONLY ACTORS WHO WERE TAKING THIS SERIOUSLY, WICH IS A SHAME AS THEY DO NOT HAVE THE LEAD OR EVEN EXTENSIVE ROLES IN THE FILM. WHILE THE BEGINING OF THE MOVIE SUPERBLY REVISITS ELM STREET, THE SECOND HALF LABOURS ALONG WITH A CRUMMY FRIDAY THE 13TH STYLE DIRECTION AND WE THE VIEWERS START TO WONDER IF THIS MOVIE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED FREDDY USES JASON. THOUGH THE TWO MADMEN DO EVENTUALLY BATTLE IT OUT IN A PRETTY IMPRESSIVE FIGHT, WE WERE PROMISED A CLEAR WINNER WICH SURPRISE SURPRISE IS INDEED NOT THE CASE HERE. RONNY YU CERTAINLY KNOWS HOW A FILM SHOULD LOOK, BUT UNFORTUNATLY DOES NOT KNOW HOW CRUMMY HIS LEADING ACTORS OUR AND IS CONTNUOUSLY INTERUPTING A PLOT LINE THATS TRYING TO TAKE OFF, BUT CANT WHEN IT KEEPS GETTING INTERRUPTED BY BAD PERFORMANCES. ULTIMATELY CHANCES ARE IF YOU ARE A FAN OF EITHER VILLAN YOU WILL FIND THIS ENTERTAINING ENOUGH, BUT HARD CORE FANS WILL FEEL A LITTLE DISSAPOINTED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great transfer with DTS-HD MA!
I live in the U.S., where our version of FvJ only has Dolby TrueHD. DTS is far better, more dynamic. I'm glad I imported this fine transfer with great picture quality, too!
