4.0 out of 5 stars ONE EXCELLENT BOOK OF ART (The Fight for the Waterhole (detail), 1903, on the cover), Mar 26 2011
By Kay's Husband - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Frederic Remington: Library of American Art Series (Hardcover)
Prior to moving to Virginia in retirement, I was a life long Ohio native; see that I bought this book at a Columbus bookstore, Little Professor-Sawmill Road, in May, 1994. The selling price then was $39.95, hard to believe how inexpensive people can get a copy through the sellers listed here.

This book, along with others such as Russell (Charlie Russell 0-8109-1571-5) were all part of a series entitled The Library of American Art. The books featured a biography of 150 pages along side numerous illustrations, color and black and white, that would acquaint each reader with the artist and his works.

The paintings enclosed in the volumes may represent mostly the more famous or recognized by each artist, but what makes these book special is the stock of good paper on which the prints were printed, allowing the color prints to be represented in a vivid style. Though I have numerous volumes on American Western artists, both the Remington and Russell volumes show their painting in a most striking manner. The colors almost explode off the page.

The books have the feel of a good art book too, bound in buckram with tightly sewn pages: no loose pages will ever tear loose and fall from these volumes! In this Remington volume there are 111 illustrations with fully 58 plates in color.

The volume was a bargain at $39.95 and is even more so now at the lower prices. With the top drawer construction of the books they probably do not show age much either.

For people not interested in the American West, other volumes were as follows:

Mary Cassatt by Nancy Mowll Mathews
Edward Hopper by Robert Hobbs
Willem de Kooning by Diane Waldman
Samuel F. B. Morse by William Kloss
Charles M. Russell by Peter H. Hassrick
Gilbert Stuart by Richard McLanathan
James Abbott McNeill Whistler by John Walker

Other volumes were in preparation so there are no doubt others too.

Recommended.
