Product Description

From Amazon.com

Like Schoolhouse Rock, Marlo Thomas's 1970s children's TV show, Free to Be… You and Me met with immediate success and became a treasured piece of entertainment over the years. Based on her award-winning album of songs, skits, and comedy, Free to Be explores the infinite possibilities of childhood. Fans know most of the skits in the 45-minute show verbatim, and it's easy to see why right from the beginning with an infectious title track followed by a puppet sketch featuring Thomas and Mel Brooks as newborns. Top talent appears on both sides of the camera, including Alan Alda who directs and performs a cartoon about a boy who wants a doll. However, the presentation does show its age at times: a teenage Michael Jackson singing (with Roberta Flack) on how he's not going to change when he grows up. For all ages. --Doug Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars Free to Be, You and Me - Timeless, Aug 29 2010
This review is from: Free to Be...You and Me (DVD)
My grown children (24 - 35) were so excited to see this again. It was one of their favourite videos as children. They are now watching it again with their children and our community has incorporated some of it into the children's mental health program. The message of inclusion and gender equality is timeless. Catchy songs, vignettes capture the attention of children from 3 - 8 easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something wonderful to grow up with, Jan 21 2007
This review is from: Free to Be...You and Me (DVD)
I saw this first as a little kid, and I've never forgotten it. A few years ago I asked my father if he could find our old copy, and I've watched it a few times since then, and it always fills my heart with so much joy. It has lessons about life, about growing up, about being happy with who you are, and it directly and indirectly teaches against discrimination. As I have just this month become an uncle, I had to find a copy I could give to my new nephew, and I hope he cherishes it like I did. I just finished watching it, and I couldn't help but break out crying a few times. That's okay, though. Like Rosey Grier sings "It's alright to cry, it might make you feel better."

I remember watching this in grade school several times. We even got permission to do a drama performance for a school fundraiser. It is good family entertainment that the whole family can enjoy.
