I've been playing around on my own for several years, trying to learn a little french on my own. This is the best I've found.

I have not studied French since I left high school in 1975. I am taking a French course on line. It's important to keep your brain active as you get older.
The book is good with things clearly explained. There was one simple hint in the book that was worth more than the cost of the book. I'm not going to share the hint, but when you buy the book I'm sure that you'll agree.

This is an EXCELLENT all-in-one French resource!! It contains everything you need to know to learn French including pronunciation, verb charts, grammar, everyday conversation topics, travel conversation and questions, tourist hot spots in Quebec and France, and an audible CD to listen to native conversations and hear correct pronunciation. An excellent resource for both French teachers and learners!! I currently use this book to teach my French classes.

This is an excellent book for learning French, even from scratch. I ordered this after not having any formal French lessons for about fifteen years, and felt like I was starting from the beginning again. This book is excellent and structured brilliantly. It starts off with the "tourist" French lessons to help you get a feel for basic phrases and everyday objects, which helps to build a vocabulary of the most commonly used and discussed things. It then moves to a technical level in the second half of the book and helps to really break down how to read and comprehend a French sentence. The authors have done such an excellent job of explaining language structure in general (noun, adjective, pronoun, infinitive, etc.) that I felt like I was also getting a solid review of English sentences as well. I am almost finished the book after about a month, and even after a month I am already able to pick up a French text and understand a good deal of it. I think after 2-3 readings of this book one could easily comprehend and read French at an intermediate level. Speaking and listening to French speakers is a different matter, especially since French is spoken very quickly by native speakers, but for reading and comprehending French this book is fantastic. At times the second half can get bogged down in technical details, but it is nonetheless necessary to break down the structure of what is evidently a beautiful and technically complex language! If you want to learn French properly and are committed to mastering it over a long term period, this book is your starting point. A++

Audio could be better March 12 2014

This book is ok.
What I mainly do not like about it is the audio.
It is set up so that the recording says something, it pauses for you to repeat, and then the recording continues. It would be easier for someone trying to learn if the pauses were more spaced out. For example, they say "Bonjour Marie" and pause. Then you are supposed to repeat that. That is easy enough and not really necessary in my opinion. Then they say a 13 word sentence and expect you to repeat all of that back. A pause in the middle of that long sentence would be much more helpful than a pause after Bonjour!

I wish I had had this book when I started French lessons, several years ago. It explains the rules of French grammar in very simple, understandable, terms. It covers everything you need to assist you in learning to speak and write French well. It explains the many nuances in the French sentence structure, which makes understanding the language easier. It's a great reference to use when you are taking French lessons!

This was ordered for the purpose of learning enough French to at least survive a future planned trip to Paris. We didn't want to be completely dependent upon the tour director, and wanted to be able to do some exploring (and local dining) on our own. With the CD to guide our pronunciation, we believe will will be able to make ourselves understandable, though obviously American tourists.
