If you are planning to go to France, not Quebec.... I find Pimsleur's courses give you great lessons, lots of time to practice what you hear, short phrases to repeat back, the speakers are clear. Great for learning in the car, or while doing mundane tasks because you don't have to refer to a book.

I'd been working with a different French program that had really helped with my reading and writing French, but not so much with my speaking. I heard about Pimsleur and bought this, and it really does help with memorizing phrases since it's all audio and repeating what you hear.

Though I only gave 4 stars because this package only really told me how to ask directions and order food, and I would assume that "Basic French" Would show you a little more than that. But overall, I enjoyed the product and plan on buying the next in the series of learning disks.

I'm really enjoying the lessons. If you think that you are going to learn French or any other foreign language in 10 lessons or 5 hours, you are kidding yourself. It takes playing the lessons several times over. Even at the end of it, this program will only give you a very limited understanding of French but it does give you the desire to continue. I took several years of Spanish in high school and can now speak and understand French with this program better than the Spanish I learned. It's a way better approach. Not worrying about punctuation and grammar in the beginning, the way you learned English. I highly recommend this to anyone with realistic expectations.
