Comfort cooking at its best.,

This review is from: Friday Night Dinners: Menus to Welcome the Weekend with Ease, Warmth and Flair (Paperback)
Very few cookbooks I'd like to buy, by simply browsing through a few pages, but this was one of them. I like the way the book is laid out, making a complete meal out of a couple of recipes (drinks, appetizers, entree, dessert)...really simplifies things if you're having a get together. Great variety of drinks, which you don't see often in most books. I've tried a few appetizers, some freeze quite well for later use (ie, Moroccan Chicken Cigars). The only reason I gave this a 4 star instead of 5, is because I'm not a fan of indexes or table of contents that are grouped by ethnicity or ingredients. I think if the publisher or the author wants to make that an added bonus on top of a standard alphabetical index, that's great. However, when I go to look for a recipe that I've made in the past, I tend to find the alphabetical index more reliable. I may not necessarily remember what ethnicity a certain recipe may have been grouped in. That's just a personal preference...still would highly recommend the book.

I love this cookbook!,

I asked for this at Christmas last year after two different friends (both excellent cooks) highly recommended it. I have been cooking from it all year and have loved every recipe. As with all Bonnie Stern books, the recipes are simple, clearly written and have wonderful flavours. There are several middle-eastern inspired recipes which introduced me to new flavours such as za'atar and preserved lemon. Most recipes are simple enough to make for my family on a Friday night, but are exotic enough to be served to a dinner party on Saturday night. Some of our favourites are: lamb kebabs on cinammon sticks; grilled eggplant w/tahina and tomato lime salsa; salad with (very yummy) pomegranate dressing; North African spiced chicken skewers; roasted cauliflower w/tahina, and of course the wheat berry, lentil and chickpea salad. There are colour photos for many recipes, and cheerful, helpful intros to most recipes. I've been cooking Bonnie's food ever since I took lessons at her school when I lived in Toronto back in the 80's and hope she keeps on writing new cookbooks!
