I've never seen Friends on actual TV. Back then I just wasn't into it.

But then I got converted and watched the American Extended DVD Edition over and over again. And on top of that I've got a pretty good memory.

And while the 16:9 picture is really well done I've already stumbled multiple times in the Pilot alone because there was missing a piece like the gang fake-dubbing the Spanish TV program or Joey going after Chandler because he mocked his Pinocchio performance.

As someone who knows the key episodes in their extended version basically by heart, it's like an audio CD with a few scratches and the music suddenly jumps in the middle of the track.

So, if you only know the broadcast version or can't basically sync-speak the dialogue then this may be for you, but me? I'm disappointed because quite frankly I didn't anticipate this.

PS:
I've just measured it and compared to the red US DVD box with the extended episodes there's a running time difference of 308 minutes (just the episodes, no extras!). That makes an average of 1 minte, 18 seconds less per episode compared to the extended episodes or roughly 31 minutes per season.

PPS: I've figured out why they used the broadcast version: They wanted to just press one version for all markets. The set includes the German dubbing and said dubbing was only created for the broadcast version. Otherwise they would have to re-cut the audio dub and insert subtitles for the missing pieces.

I think that this is a very nice collector's edition of Friends. It is small enough that it won't take up too much room on your shelves. The ten seasons worth of discs are evenly shared amongst six "wallets" (each with a cast member's face on the cover). This does mean that each wallet contains one and part of a second season, but there is no real confusion. While the wallets do share, the episodes for one season clearly end on one DVD before beginning the next season on a new DVD. Episode titles and descriptions are provided in a large soft-covered booklet, tucked into the back of the box set. This will mean that you will have to refer back to it, occasionally. However, I think that Friends is the type of show, where the actual title or episode description is not particularly important. Normally, one would just pop a DVD into the player and sit back to enjoy a few hours...with their Friends!

This is a great TV show. If I were just rating the series, I'd give it five stars. Perhaps giving this set one star is a little harsh, but putting these episodes on Blu Ray is totally pointless. Allow me to explain: The show was originally recorded in very low quality because HD TVs didn't exist at the time. I doubt the studio could even clean these episodes up without exacerbating the problem, so what we're stuck with is lots -- and I mean LOTS -- of film grain and overly warm coloration. And yes, I'm talking about the Blu Ray edition. Remember what DVD video transfer looked like when the first movies came out in 1997? Well, that what this looks like in 2015! Even an up-converted DVD has better definition. So, why bother paying $20 more for Blu Rays when the picture quality is going to be exactly the same on the DVDs? I suppose there might be a few less discs needed in the Blu Ray set, but otherwise there's no advantage. Save your money.

- Great show in amazing 1080p quality. Obviously you can't compare the image quality of Friends to lets say The Dark Knight Rises, since the technology didn't exist in the 90's, but it is more than acceptable.
- The sound is great, (don't think it is TrueHD though)
- The shows are great, the bonuses are ok. Beware, the extended versions of the show are not in this box set.
- Overall, a good set to own if you're a fan of the show. If you're a collector, probably better off waiting for the BD version with the extended shows.

Hope this helps! Enjoy!

Quality set, all the way. If you have dvds of the "Friends" series, you likely already realize the quality of these older dvds is somewhat lacking due to the major improvements in video technology over just the last 15-20 years. This set shows how much improved video, particularly, can make a series seem refreshed and even episodes that have been watched many times are again enjoyable to see again in this new light. A terrific show that will last in the minds of fans forever, and this excellent set shows it off again. Very well done. ps: once the tv re-runs are finished, what then? Fans of shows like "Friends" need to keep this in mind.

I was sooo excited when this first was announced.

I have the dvds, and they all have extended versions of each episodes. and since i've watched those extended episodes many times, i know whats the next lines.

sadly, it doesnt have the extended episodes. just the straight original airing episodes, which suck because the extended cuts were pretty funny.

The HD quality is AMAZING. great job on that.

but hopefully they wont release another bluray set, because I don't wanna spend anymore money! LOL

but it's cool.
