This is the first in a series of comprehensive commentaries on the Book of Genesis that the late Professor Umberto Cassuto had planned as part of a magnum opus embracing the whole Pentateuch and also the Book of Psalms. The aim of this commentary is to explain, with the help of an historico-philological method of interpretation, the simple meaning of the Biblical text, and to arrive, as nearly as possible, at the sense that the words of the Torah were intended to have for the reader at the time they were written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic conservative Jewish scholarship Aug 23 2009
By John Mcmath - Published on Amazon.com
Cassuto's vast background in biblical and Near Eastern studies, particularly the Ugaritic material, make his contributions to the field extremely valuable. His clear and honest appraisal of the meaning of the text itself is often ground-breaking, especially in the light of modern scholarly pre-occupation with higher criticism. Cassuto dispenses with all of that (his Documentary Hypothesis is a must read for anyone who really wants to understand the reasons for rejecting the documentary mythology altogether)and handles the Hebrew text itself. This book is not a good introductory text, nor is it intended for students without a serious background in classical Hebrew and cognate studies. A knowledge of rabbinics (particularly Talmudic methods) is helpful. But for the well-prepared scholar, this book is a rare joy.

Book of Genesis divided to many slim volumes, each volume cost a lot, it seems like an outprint old plate, and shipping from UK to USA takes a long time.
The pointviews somehow at some point seems strage, perhaps Rabbi always has some different view?
