Book Description

Albert Marquet (1875-1947) is one of the most forgotten and neglected artists of the twentieth century. His early career followed that of Matisse, his close and lifelong friend. They were students together of the French symbolist painter Gustave Moreau and were important members of the Fauve movement. After that brief early affiliation, Marquet refused to ally himself with any dominant art style, preferring instead his own intuition; consequently, he developed a unique approach which drew from both Fauvism and Impressionism but was entirely his own.

From Fauvism to Impressionism: Albert Marquet is the catalogue of an exhibition of Marquet's work that will be touring the United States for the next two years. It showcases the artist's energetic landscapes, portraits, and startling nudes, and is accompanied by new essays placing his work in the context of modern art.

This review is from: From Fauvism to Impressionism: Albert Marquet (Paperback)
Albert Marquet found his artistic painting voice early and was an important and consistent player among his Fauve and Impressionist contemporaries.

I rated the book 5 stars as it is exactly what it claims to be. I would only wish that it was a heavy tome with more of everything he did, but that is not the intended scope of this book.

The reproductions are good and the writing is solid but the star is Marquet's truly wonderful paintings.

This closest friend of Matisse, dating from student days to death, Marquet incorporated the best from the Fauves, the Impressionists and cloisonné from Japanese prints, into a unique style and mood all his own.

I recommend this book as a 5 star introduction to a remarkable painter.

This review is from: From Fauvism to Impressionism: Albert Marquet (Paperback)
Albert Marquet, one of the bright lights of post-impressionism, is well-served by this exhibition catalogue. The biographic text and commentary on his work and the selection and reproduction of his works for the exhibition are first-rate. The reader learns a great deal about Marquet's association with his comtemporaries--often much better known--of the early 20th Century and gains an appreciation for his steadfast individualism as an artist. He deserves much greater exposure than he has gotten to date and this book is certainly serves to meet that need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marquet's appreciation of his own work, Oct 4 2007
By Paul Marechal "Paul Maréchal" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: From Fauvism to Impressionism: Albert Marquet (Paperback)
This exhibition catalogue offers many illustrations of the paintings Marquet himself choose to give to the famous french Musée d'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris-better known as Beaubourg for its avant-garde architecture-along with all the other Marquet paintings and drawings acquired by the institution over the years until recently. The variety of the works reproduced gives the reader a good sense of the excellent and complete painter Marquet was and that he wasn't just the painter of the so well-known views of Paris by the Seine River most people know of.
