Product Description

Product Description

Renowned therapist, eating disorder specialist and recovering food addict Kay Sheppard helps countless individuals win their battles over food addiction-people for whom diets, pills and purging have become a way of life. In 1993, her groundbreaking book, Food Addiction: The Body Knows, explained the illness of food addiction from the physiological origins through recovery. Today, obesity is on the rise. In addition to the 300,000 overweight people in this country, millions more who may not look overweight are unable to control their eating. Sheppard's follow-up book, From the First Biteoffers the latest medical insights into food addiction coupled with time-tested, practical advice. Unlike other books that are very dry in nature, this book includes compelling personal stories and do's and don'ts from other recovering and relapsed food addicts, including the author herself, who began her own recovery in 1967. The book explains how to avoid the physiological and situational triggers that lead to relapse; how to confront the emotional issues behind food cravings; how to establish a balanced food plan that eliminates cravings; and how to avoid hidden dangers in cleverly packaged foods. The book also includes a handy Twelve-Step workbook. Just as Sheppard's first book broke new ground, her latest work offers a critical first step for food addicts on the road to physical, emotional and spiritual recovery.

About the Author

KAY SHEPPARD, M.A., is a recovering food addict and the bestselling author of Food Addiction: The Body Knows. Since its publication in 1993, the book has become a primary resource for food addicts, bulimics and compulsive overeaters. She conducts five-day intensive stabilization and weekend workshops for food addicts worldwide. She is a charter member of the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals and the host of the Food Addiction Conference for America Online's Addictions and Recovery Forum. She manages a message board and handles hundreds of e-mails every week from food addicts looking for solutions. Her personal recovery began in 1967. She lives in Florida.

5.0 out of 5 stars A REAL solution.....Don't miss this book!, Nov 18 2002
This review is from: From the First Bite: A Complete Guide to Recovery from Food Addiction (Paperback)
I have suffered from compulsive overeating for 48 years. I have tried Weight Watchers, OA, Jenny Craig, liquid dieting, rice, beans, water...You name it I have tried it. When I started to read this book (mind you grudgingly) I was absolutely enthralled. Language was every day and simple to understand and concepts which would be absolutely ridiculous to a "normal" eater made absolute sense to me. I am actually enjoying learning about myself. The more I learn, the more I understand. I realize that I can finally learn to "eat to live" rather than "live to eat." If you are a warm fuzzy, and are tired of reading the medical jargon and fancy words, please do yourself a big favor and buy this book. If you are seriously looking for help with your compulsive overeating, this program coupled with OA is a miracle. Don't waste anymore time reading about this.
GO AND DO IT!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book ever written on recovery from food addiction, Oct 15 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: From the First Bite: A Complete Guide to Recovery from Food Addiction (Paperback)
This is the only book I will ever need! As a recovering food addict, this book has it all: Kay's excellent food plan, tips on getting abstinent and staying abstinent, how to deal with the food plan in various life situations (travel, family, etc.) and a wealth of experience strength, and hope from someone who really knows. If you have had a problem with food and can't seem to deal with it, do youself a favor and buy this book. Can't hurt -- what's ten bucks compared to all the money you spend in a day on food? It might just save your life. It saved mine.

3.0 out of 5 stars Food is Not Heroin or Alcohol, Sep 25 2002
This review is from: From the First Bite: A Complete Guide to Recovery from Food Addiction (Paperback)
In many respects this book contains wonderful insights, analysis, guidance and direction and clearly helps define food addiction. However, if you are a vegetarian, there is no food plan approved, thus you are out of luck. The suggested Food Plan is virtually impossible and unrealistic in today's society given the shear number of foods one must eliminate. Abstinence is one thing if it's heroin, entirely another if the substance is food, as one is, by nature, required to eat to survive. Abstaining from all of the "trigger foods" listed seems virtually impossible to me. I can't help but wonder if this Food Plan is what all OA members abide by?
