Review

“Thorne is back. That’s all anyone has to say about this terrific new book by Mark Billingham. This is a tough, taut thriller with enough suspense to keep you reading late into the night. If you haven’t already discovered Thorne, this is the perfect place to begin this great series.” (Globe & Mail )

“..the plot is original and spellbinding, and the writing is vintage Billingham…you won’t be disappointed” (Sherbrooke Record )

“Cleverly conceived and tightly plotted, by turns tense, moving, and surprising, FROM THE DEAD is Billingham at his best.” (Reviewing the Evidence )

Book Description

When Donna Langford receives a very recent photo of her ex-husband in the post, she gets the shock of her life. Because she’s just spent ten years in prison for organising his murder. When her daughter goes missing, Donna believes there can only be one man responsible and hires Anna Carpenter, a determined young private investigator, to find him. DI Tom Thorne worked on the Alan Langford case, so when Carpenter brings the photo to him, he refuses to believe that the man whose body was found in a burned-out car ten years before can still be alive. But when a prison inmate that he and Anna interview is viciously murdered, Thorne starts to understand that Langford is not only alive, but ready to get rid of anyone who could threaten his comfortable new life in Spain...

4.0 out of 5 stars Control Freak, Oct 2 2010
By

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This review is from: From the Dead (Hardcover)
D.I Tom Thorne is one among the outstanding protagonists in the crime genre who doggedly solve murders and other mysteries while questioning their own talents, motivations and personalities, often to their own detriment. He, like many of the others, criticizes himself, albeit unnecessarily, because he, and they, do achieve success.

We see Thorne agonizing over the court's findings when it frees an accused murderer he and everyone else is convinced is guilty. Key to the innocent verdict is the fact that there is no body. But there is no time to worry about the case before another arises to occupy Thorne: a 10-year-old case that just won't disappear.

Donna Langford has just been released from prison after serving a sentence for having hired a hit man to murder her husband. Then she begins to receive photos of a man she says is that same husband. When she learns that her daughter has vanished, she can only conclude her husband is responsible, and she employs a private detective, Anna Carpenter, to investigate. Anna approaches Thorne and together they begin to work the case, setting off all kinds of repercussions which may be engineered by a man who is supposed to be dead but is perhaps intent on preserving a reconstructed life.

Once again, the author has written a deep police procedural with significant insights into the characters. While the investigation is hampered by the craftiness of the "dead" husband and roadblocks he throws in Thorne's way, he plods on doggedly, just in character. Written with smoothness and urbanity, the plot moves forward in unexpected ways. Recommended.

I have now read all of the Tom Thorne books written by Mark Billingham. This is the best book yet, and I can hardly wait until he releases another Tom Thorne book. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the book as a "10."

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER FROM BILLINGHAM, Nov 21 2010

I love this author. His character Tom Thorne is the best. I eagerly await his books so much so that I buy them from the British Amazon.com rather than wait for them to come out in the states. Billingham never disappoints. There are always numerous plot twists and never a boring page. I just wish he were more prolific as I become impatient waiting for the next novel to come out. I understand that 2 of his books have been made into series for British television. Sure wish we could get them over here. Sleepyhead is one of them. The relationship between Thorne and best friend Phil Hendrix is priceless. If you like British mysteries/police procedurals, don't miss Billingham's books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Derivative homosexuality, music, and blunders that fail to persuade, Jan 19 2012
By flipspiceland - Published on Amazon.com

This review is from: From the Dead (Paperback)
Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis were one of the first Het/Hom teams to enter popular detective fiction. I don't find it particularly contributory to the story telling, but off putting and irritating. A way to make sexual commentary about gay conquests seem mainstream, and 'diversity' a cause célèbre.

The blunders Thorne is 'forced' to make in the author's plot seem juvenile, rigorously contrived, and ultimately, unconvincing, inauthentic, and a failure to 'humanize' him.

The music preferences are also a gimmick employed by other authors, yet another derivation.

Too bad really, because his writing is otherwise outstanding, world class and instructive. Having read 3 of his offerings now
I have been disappointed at the denouement of all three and will be reading only one more which I ordered simultaneously to the others and hate to throw away.

I have now finished with, "From the Dead", and, no surprise, I can safely say that Billingham has no clue how to write a denoument that is as attractive as his writing. He toned down the homosexual and music references in this one, but his heart is not in these books, does not 'start' with the 'ending' leaving a dissatisfied customer at the finish.

He's likely in the wrong genre to capitalize on the public hunger for suspense, procedural, and thriller novels. I can see no other reason since I can write a more riveting ending to each one of his books and I'm no writer.
