As we plan our trip to Amsterdam and the Netherlands we wanted a book that would give us a guide to walking tours and ways to see the sights of the city. We have used the series before (Paris, LA) and found them helpful. It seems to be just what we wanted and is small enough to carry with us on our tours.

I ended up being stuck in Amsterdam for almost 2 weeks as a result of the volcano. This little book fit right into my pocket and went everywhere with me. I ended up going just about everywhere it recommended and then some. I also had another book, a little larger, that supplemented for trips outside of Amsterdam. There was no doubt that I had perfect coverage and in fact will be lending my books to some friends who will be heading over later and, hopefully will not get stuck in town.

The book is logical. The font is read-able. It fits in a jacket pocket or purse. It does not have a pushy viewpoint. The fold out map was clear.

The pictures and information compiled in this book are good for the things that are covered. Unfortunately, this book spends the majority of its pages repeating itself. Instead of providing information on everything, the writer gives his very biased opinions on what he thinks is important. There are only a few hotels covered and even fewer restaurants. The first half of the book is about what he would do if he had 1 day versus 2 days or 3 days. For me as an adventurer, I would rather have been given unbiased insight on all things Amsterdam instead of just the highlights of the author's opinions. I didn't read many reviews that sounded like he had actually been to the restaurant or night club or stayed in that hotel. It's very generic and looks like he just pasted the brief summary (if any) from somewhere else.

On the positive side, the attractions and narratives of the sights he does think are important are very discriptive and well written.

I would not recommend this book for someone who has never visited Amsterdam.
